My topic is How does Claudius manipulate ppl in the play.

THESIS: Claudius is the consummate manipulator. In order to keep his crown on the throne of Denmark, he manipulates events, people's life and relationships. In this,he makes use of his power, other's loyalty and their trust.

Claudius's continues trying to gain power through both manipulation of Hamlet's life as well as attempted killing of Hamlet.Claudius' thirst for power starts with the murder of his own brother, King Hamlet,so that he may accede to the the throne of Denmark. However, Claudius is threaten by Hamlet's returning, and he tries to prevent Hamlet to discovering his murder of King Hamlet. In order to do that, Claudius uses his power to manipulate Hamlet's life, even having attempt to kill him. When Hamlet receives the news of his father's death,Claudius first tries to console Hamlet in soft words. In the speech,"From the first coarse till he that died to-day, 'this must be so, we pray you, throw to earth. This unrevealing woe, and think of us. As of a father."(ActⅠ,105) Claudius conveys a remorseful and sincere tone while speaking to Hamlet, he tries to explain the cycle of life and death to Hamlet, that every person who has ever lived has to accept the inevitability of death. He adds that life must go on and suggests Hamlet to stop grieving and accept Claudius as a substitute parent. However, his plan did not runs smoothly. Later on,Claudius gets suspicious on Hamlet's irrational behaviour and sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on Hamlet. Furthermore, when Claudius discovers that Hamlet is aware of his foul crimes, he then decides that Hamlet represents a threat that must be disposed of. Therefore, he resolves to send Hamlet to England in hope" " The true purpose of the scheme has revealed in late stage of the play, as in Caludius quotes"Till I know tis'gone, howe'er my haps, my joys were ne'er begun."(ActⅣ,i,70) Caludius states his attempt to murder Hamlet. He put Hamlet on a false assignment which is intended to send him for a execution in England. At this point, Claudius is willing to protect the fact of his murder at all costs, even if it means sacrifices the life of his stepson.

Manipulation of people's emotion and relationship are cleverly used by Caludius in his scheme of gaining power and authority.Caludius has put Gertrude, The Queen in total deception. He married the Queen as a strategic move to help him seize the throne away from Hamlet after the death of the King. Without knowing the crime that Caludius has murdered her former husband, Queen Gertrude trusts in Claudius's feigned motive of saving the nation and agrees to marry him.Claudius also disguises himself as a loving and caring stepfather to Hamlet in order to gaining Gertrude's love and trust. For instance,Claudius shows his fictitious love for Hamlet in front of the Queen,"This mad young man but so much our love..."(ActⅣ,i,20) Claudius shows his concern for Hamlet's mental illness, but in his true mind, he has lose his patient with Hamlet and having the intention to kill him.Critics generally regard Gertrude as a weakwilled, highly dependent on Claudius and easily manipulate by him.[ (Shakespeare for Students. "Critical Interpretations". Ed. Mark W. Scott. Michigan: Detroit 1992) ] Claudius considers Ophelia as a weakness of Hamlet that will tempt him to reveals the reason for his madness. Since Polonius is the father of Ophelia,he has the ability to restrains her daughter to accept Prince Hamlet's love. And by doing that to Hamlet,he could easily breakdown and lose his sanity. Claudius has manipulates both Ophelia and Hamlet's emotion through his subordinate,Polonius's power. Same method also applied on Laertes. Claudius dupes Laertes by convincing him that Hamlet is responsible for his father's death and that Hamlet is their common enemy. Claudius starts by challenging Laerte's loyalty to his father, Polonius."Laertes, was your father dear to you? Or are you like the painting of a sorrow, As face without heart?(ActⅣ,i,107) Claudius is insinuating that if Laertes has the loyalty to his father, he would defend his honor in action. And as result, Lartes states his determination of revenge on Hamlet in "To cut his throat i' the church."(ActⅣ,126) Which shows that Claudius has successfully take advantage of Laerter's anger and hatred of Hamlet in helping himself achieve the goal of killing Hamlet. According to the critisim on Caludius in Hamlet Outline, it states that "Claudius is clearly a clever politician and manipulator of people and he skilfully turns Laertes' sorrow and anger to his own purposes."

By making use of his power, Claudius takes full advantage of people's loyalties in assist himself to take control over the event. Polonius dutifully serves for King Caludius,he is willing to use his own daughter to spy on Hamlet. Later Polonius voluntarily devoted himself to eavesdrop on the conversation between Hamlet and the Queen. However, he has only put himself in danger and eventually is slain by Hamlet. Polonius's death leads to Ophelia's madness and later drowning brought on by grief and alsoto Laertes' alliance with King Claudius to kill Hamlet, to avenge his father's death. Overall,Claudius has not only take advantage of Polonius's loyalty and makes him willing to scarifies his own daughter to achieve Claudius's goal, but also used Laerter as a tool to assist him in killing of Hamlet. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are courtiers to King Claudius, both of them grow up with Hamlet. When Claudius assign them to send Hamlet to England, neither of men has a problem trading their friendship to betray Hamlet, and choose to obey the King's order. "Most holy and religious fear it is, To keep those many, many bodies safe. That live and feed upon your majesty."(ActⅢ,i,10) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern express their respect and devotion to Claudius in this particular speech, saying that it's a sacred duty to protect the lives of all those who depend on highness of Claudius. (I need a conclusion sentence, plz add any suggestion for it...)

In conclusion,Claudius portrays as a crafty manipulator of people, his lies and deceit put all others at risk but himself. Cladius' strength is not physical strength, but his mental ability to persuade the people around him to do things for his benefit. His deceptions cause the deaths of all the people that close to him. Polonius,Laetre,Ophelia and the Queen all killed under Claudius's manipulation and scheme. Claudius uses people's loyalty and makes them to follow his commends; he also mask his evilness with sincerity and fooled others' emotions.Ultimately, Cladius' scheming caught up with him and led to not only his downfall, but also the downfall of Denmark. In Ruan's words, to conclude that "Claudius is a very manipulative character and in the end it costs him both his life and everything he works so diligently at gaining."

You probably shouldn't start with Hamlet. By your own admission, Claudius fails to manipulate Hamlet to his own ends, which makes Hamlet a poor example to demonstrate the truth of your thesis statement. Claudius's manipulation of Laretes, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Polonius, and Gertrude are all much stronger points, and you should use at least some of them to establish the truth of your thesis before looking at how he attempts to manipulate Hamlet and why he fails.
