The assignment was to create my own argument about the book "A thousand Splendid Suns" by khaled hosseni.
So far i have : Thesis: Cultural tradition and social standards exist as an attempt to create order in a society, but this sense of order comes at the cost of negating the human rights and autonomy of groups such as women.
But my professor said this:
This is too general and will not lead you to a literary analysis of the book. All society's the create an order oppress women? Then you look at how Afghani order in particular oppresses women but who can read this book and disagree? Also, you address the book very little in the body of the outline and the paper should be focused entirely on a literary analysis of the book. Since this is a literature class, analyze why Hosseini put together the story the way he did. Why does he choose to show the oppression women face through telling the story of these two women in particular? What forms of oppression do we see them face and "so what?" does this reveal? What patterns emerge? What can we learn from this? Lead with analysis of the story. What can we learn by examining the different male-female relationships in the book? Why does Hosseini create such differing men? How are they affected and shaped by their relationships with the women in their lives? By their treatment of them? Why does Hosseini have Mariam murder Rasheed and sacrifice herself for Laila? What is he saying about women's relationships? How do gender roles function in the novel? Try answering some of these questions to make a more arguable thesis based on the book.
I need help trying to relate back to the book and make it a arguable thesis statement.
Please help need to start working on this tomorrow thanks you!
