This is the assignment:
Shakespeare was obsessed with the concept of appearance vs. reality. Blindness is a an over-arching motif in King Lear. Choose at least three characters who demonstrate some kind of blindness, and examine how they are blind, why they are blind, and to what degree they learn to see. Support all assertions using textual evidence.
These are some of my rough ideas, please tell me what you think...or add to them if you can!
King Lear:
-hes blind because he can't see people for who they really are. ex. Banished his loyal daughter Cordelia and let his two daughters corrupt his mind which killed him.
-also hes blind since he banished Kent, but Lear can be very stubborn
-He is blind because he likes to be flattered and can be tricked into thinking things that are not very true
-He finds out that his blindness caused him to go mad when his sisters locked him out of the castle when it was storming
Gloucester:
-Hes blind because he couldn't realize that Edmund was the true traitor and Edgar was the loyal son.
-he wanted to kill Edgar (edmund blinded him)
-He finds out that he was blinded when he got his eyes poked out
I only have two characters right as of now.
