This is my first essay for the winter quarter in Eng 1101 it's about if the drinking age should be lowered or stay the same which is 21 in the U.S. I wanted to know can I start my first paragraph with a question and answer it?

I think it always appears quite catchy if you start an eassay with a question followed by an answer to that, so it would work fine.

I agree a question will engage the reader soI would say start with a question.
Good luck

I would have to agree with the other two post start with a question and answer it. Just remember though don't use your main idea right of the bat or you will not be able to go anywhere with it, all you will have is a question and answer with no support.

Sure you can, but it can be sort of a cliche. I do it sometimes, because it is great for optimizing clarity and reader engagement of the material, but... it is overused. Still... if you do it in a very interesting way, you are alright.

This is an interesting question! I tend to think it should not be lowered. Why not let the kids drive sober for a few years before they start drinking at bars? That's what I think. If they get the license at 16 or 17 and then can enjoy driving responsibly for a few years, maybe they will gain valuable experience that will save theri lives when they join the ranks of the barflies.

My topic is Should the legal drinking age be lowered? I stand against this issue.

This is an argumentation essay and I do not know how to get started. I have to also debate the topic after the essay. Please any help will be appreciated. I am stuck on what points I need to make. I have several things that I would like to cite as well. Just getting started is a struggle for me.

I think the hook to start your essay could be telling a story of how an under age drunk driver killed themselves (and/or others) while under the influence of alcohol. I'm sure if you googled that, you'd get several hits of real stories. Great way to draw the reader into your argument and start off with an attention-grabbing introduction. Hope that helps get you started!
