These are the instructions for my paper-Quick Paper - What specific things from Chapter 1 did you learn that was new and interesting to you? How has your definition of interpersonal communication changed since you have read chapter 1? What specific communication skill are you hoping to learn more about this semester - why?
Could someone please help me edit it? Thank you!
I have learned a many different things from reading this book. The author says that many people believe they already know how to communicate so why would they want to study it? This is something I also believed to be true, until I began reading further into the chapter. I do know how to communicate, but I will be honest and admit that I am not a pro at it. Communication is more than just talking back and forth with someone. There are many different aspects to it. Many of us do it all subconsciously and don't realize what we are actually doing.
Until reading this book I never really thought about the "feedback" part of communication. This is something that we all do whether we realize it or not. There are different types of feedback, like nodding along or agreeing with someone as they are telling you something or staring off into space while someone is telling you a story. Most of us do not even realize what we are doing, it ends up being more of a subconscious action. This is something I had never truly taken a look at. Today I decided to focus on feedback when having conversations with people and it was incredible to see the different kinds of feedback that I received. One person twirled their hair while staring into space, and another nodded along with huge eyes showing how intrigued they were at what I was telling them. Feedback is something new I have learned about and hope to learn even more about it.
My definition of interpersonal communication has changed drastically just by reading the first chapter of this book. Before reading, my definition or idea of interpersonal communication was just having a conversation, but I am beginning to realize there is so much more to it. Yes, communicating is having a conversation, but there are many other pieces to it. I never thought that communicating was something you should practice and study, I just thought it was something you were born with. Studying and practicing communicating, which you do every day whether you know it or not, is very important and can be very benefitial to you in the long wrong. There will be many circumstances where you will need to communicate something difficult in your life, and having a bit of background knowledge about communication can only help you succeed in this goal.
I am hoping to learn how to communicate some of my feelings and learn why I have a hard time doing it. When I was younger, and when I would get upset or someone would say something hurtful to me I would shut down completely. It is not that I didn't know what I wanted to say, I just couldn't spit it out for some reason. My parents resorted to paper and pencil to solve this problem. If something would happen to me and I would shut down we would write notes back and forth from different rooms. Although I have gotten better at this over time I still sometimes freeze up in the beginning of a conversation, and it will take me a few minutes to get rolling and start communicating.
There are a lot of new things I have already learned in the first two weeks of this class and I am hoping to learn so much more! I know communication is a tool I will be using for the rest of my life and it is very vital, so getting some tips and pointers will be very helpful for me for future reference. I am also hoping to learn more about myself and others through this, and that I already am! So far I have enjoyed reading and learning about this subject and hope my excitement will continue throughout the semester.
