I put together a rough draft of my personal statement for a speech language pathology program, I was hoping I could get some feedback on my first draft. If there is any suggestions for my essay I would really appriciate it!

I could not contain my excitement the day Steven looked up at me with his eager eyes and said the simple phrase, "wee-wee". The phrase, "wee-wee", is his way of expressing his need to use the restroom and being a child with Autism with a limited vocabulary, it was hard not to be ecstatic when he muttered that basic utterance with out any prompts. I have been doing ABA therapy with Steven for a while now and have been able to see great improvement with his speech and other cognitive skills. That excitement I felt when I heard him speak made me realize my true passion to become a speech language pathologist and witness more riveting milestones with other children.

Growing up, I have always been drawn to children with special needs. I've been a care-provider for a family with a child with Autism and I also had numerous volunteer experiences with individuals with special needs through out college. I currently work for Children's Hospital at their Autism Center where I do ABA therapy with a number of kids that fall under the spectrum. I am very passionate about my job and the children I work with. I would love to continue to work within this field as an SLP and help children with Autism improve and develop their necessary language skills. Working at Children's has provided me the opportunity to gain experience working with children who have speech impairments. I have done certain programs with children working on their CVC blends (consonant vowel consonant words), receptive and expressive language abilities, verbal imitation skills as well as a few others. I feel the knowledge that I have gained from this job will help me achieve my goals in graduate school and in my pursuit to become an SLP.

I am extremely eager and excited to continue on my journey in becoming a speech language pathologist. I am ready to take the next step in my academic career to learn more about communicative disorders and the procedures that help individuals improve their speech and language skills. I feel your university will provide me with the essential tools I need to achieve these goals and will prepare me for a career where I can help others communicate and express themselves to their fullest.

Good luck with school and have fun! Some of my favorite people are autistic!
