career in environmental engineering
My interest in engineering dates back in my adolescence, assisting my father fixing windpump. I found very amusing this process which has low-tech fundament, but remarkable effectiveness. Time after, while I was helping my father in a solar pump to a small community and I realized the effect of services in people I decided to pursue my undergraduate career in environmental engineering and since I had the abilities and knowledge I chose to do develop my studies at Instituto Politecnico Nacional.
When I began my undergraduate career, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of engineering courses. I have also the opportunity to start multidisciplinary subjects such as Biotechnology and Society. After these subjects, I solidify my interest in engineering, however, with the last one I realized that social sciences and technologies had to be wise managed and fused in order to impact society. I reinforce this idea when I studied Municipal Solid Waste Management Technologies class at UCLA. From an international perspective, I analyzed the use of technologies that Los Angeles has for different sustainable projects.
From my interdisciplinary range of classes, the class I remember the most "Alternate energies", mainly because the place I am from is one of the zones with great potential for solar and eolic energies. As pertain of my academic efforts, Among 30 or so students in my generation, I was the only who accomplished a total of 60 classes, plus my thesis' pre-research, and my internship at a chemical lab within four years, it was challenging for me to perform as proficient as I wanted. After this time I spent 9 months on my undergraduate research analyzing and quantifying the soluble fraction of Cd, Cr and Zn in an old mining zone to model and generate isoconcentration maps of the soluble fraction in the mining zone and the neighboring urban zone.
Another interest of mine is the social labor. Since I was thirteen years old I actively participate in what I found the most rewarding experience; helping other people, especially groups in marginal areas. In 2017, I became ambassador of my state in The National Peasant Confederation (CNC), where I had the opportunity to help people especially peasant women. My activities were mainly advice, develop productive, and social programs to empower them. I am also interested in education and I am now volunteering in a NPO called OMNInano where I help within the translation from English to Spanish of educational resources to high school and colleges students.
During my undergraduate experience in a fildtrip, I visited a rural zone where I found a family which was living from clandestine tree carving to survive and to stock up on basic food items the following days. Looking that at this family struggling and at the potential that these communities have encouraged me to look for solutions. Even though I am interested in general public services, energy and I would like to work in projects like the one that Dr. Kelly Twomey Sanders has worked with. From her career, I found impressive her research about "Clean Energy and Water: Assessment of Mexico for Improved Water Services and Renewable Energy" and the way she addresses key point of the situation in Mexico. I would like to work in the area of research but also to planning energy plans for the private industry. I hope to be able to complete sustainable plans from infrastructure systems until model and social impact to drive communities more sustainable opportunities.
Your Green Technology program is one of the best in the country, and my conversation with several you are your alumni have served to deepen my interest in attending. I admire the approach that USC gives to the sustainable problems and I have seen that the effectiveness of a sustainable project is based on the execution and the preparation of its students. I am looking forward to gaining the skills to approach different challenges in communities where services like energy can be improved and I hope I can get the privilege of continuing my studies in this institution.
