Hey guys, please help me to improve this essay. Thanks
Create an essay explaining in what way the question of sustainability is important to the candidate's home country/city/region, what s/he plans to do after graduation, and why, specifically, s/he has chosen MSc ISD. The essay should not exceed 2000 words.
I always feel a strong connection with design. As a little boy, I love stacking LEGO pieces, creating houses, buildings, and I imagine myself to live in it. Later, during my adolescent years, I found out that I had a strong inner passion for drawing and physics Those were my favorite courses at school and I was always interested in taking part in related competitions for children. Soon, I realized that the field of design and engineering would be an excellent choice for my future studies.
Those are reasons why I enrolled to Bachelor of Architectural Engineering Program at xxxx on 2006. I want to create a building and enjoy my creation. During my final years my undergraduate thesis entitled xxxx was awarded with 6th Best Design at Faculty of Architecture Public Expose Awards. I incorporate sustainable design with inclusive design approach to make an environmentally friendly and accesible to the blind and visually impaired in Jakarta.
Later, upon completion of my undergraduate study. I was offered a job at xxxx, an architectural consultant. The most interesting project I handled there is designing a house located in Almere, The Netherlands. The client asked to design a house with sustainable design approach. While in tropical country, like Singapore and Indonesia, we avoid a west-oriented house because of the heat it will produce. But, in the subtropical country, like The Netherlands, west-oriented house is more preferred because they want to feel the heat as long as possible. They also preferred a steel-framed house, which is still unfamiliar in Indonesia, because it's more efficient and quicker to build. Therefore, I researched a lot of things reagrding sustainable design in subtropical climate. I gained a lot of knownledge and experience in this particular project.
However, during that project I realized that sustainable design is becoming very important in architecture and my country, Indonesia, needs a more sustainable way to develop Indonesia. Indonesia are gifted with an abudance of natural resources. Its 1.9 million square of lands are surrounded by 3.3 sq of oceans. But because of a weak government policies and poverty, million acres of tropical forest are destroyed every year. Indonesia experienced a lot of environmetal and manmade disasters recently, such as earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, floods, and landslides. A lot people were killed and many houses are destroyed.
These increasing number of disasters will affect human sustainibility. This problem seemed to be difficult for conventional solution therefore sustainable architectural design strategy was needed. We should develop a way to make building not only economically beneficial, but also environmentally responsible, and this is what prompts me to study more in this fields.
On 16th of February 2013, I met a delegate from National University Singapore in an exhibition at Jakarta and it is from there I came to know about this program. As I researched about the curicullum for Master of Science - Integrated Sustainable Design in National University of Singapore. I'm particularly interested about the design methods and techniques used by buildings and cities in Asia to achieve sustainibility, which I think can be applied in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Those are my prime movers to apply for graduate studies at National University of Singapore. After gaining a valuable insight and knowledge of this program. I would like to continue my career as an architectural consultant or work as an environmental consultant in a fim to provide an insight of sustainable design in architecture.
The experts say that my country, Indonesia will be the eighth largest economy in the world and its rising economics should be followed by a more sustainable developments. That is why I believe that by then my knowledge about sustainable design will be much needed and I will play an important part in giving my knowledge and ideas in sustainable design, which is my long term goal. I hope that by explaining why I chose this program, you have a better idea about my seriousness towards this interesting graduate studies. I'm ready to devote my mind and time into studying in beautiful Singapore at National University of Singapore.
