After conducting several scientific research studies during my junior year in university, I am seeking opportunities to engage in a Ph.D program to continue my scientific pursuit in control science.
While majoring in Control Science and Engineering at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, I discovered my interest in control science. Promoted by this interest, I joined my current supervisor, Prof. Yan-Wu Wang's group and carried out several works of research on control science.
I composed an article investigating the synchronization of neural networks under com-munication constraints. This was the first paper studying the communication constraints problem in neural networks and many new problems had to be solved. To tackle these problems, I referenced the method applied in networked control systems and broadened the original method into the nonlinear area. Furthermore, I also co-authored a paper with Prof. Wang investigating the synchronization problem of complex networks containing switching behaviors on both its nodes and the network topology. Different from former works, the switching modes in this paper are independent from each other. This paper was accepted by the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control. From my research experiences, I learnt to appreciate the significance of communication in scientific study. While participating in these research works, Prof. Wang and I spent a lot of time discussing the choice of system models and the method of deriving main theorems. These communications broadened my view and inspired me with new ideas, which was an incredible and important opportunity for me.
In addition to these research activities, as a leader of a research group, I also wrote and received funding from Huazhong University of Science and Technology to support our research project in the next year. To achieve this, I prepared a comprehensive research plan for our schedule and assignments. By working in and leading a team, my interpersonal and leadership skills have been enhanced, and more importantly, I became more aware of the intricacies and significance of working within a group.
Because of my positive research experiences, I want to continue my work in research in order to enjoy the delight and satisfaction of scientific study. In speaking with my supervisor, I realized how effective Ph.D studies could be for my style of research. Therefore, I have decided to apply to a Ph.D program to go even further in the control area.
After my extensive research, I am deeply impressed by the research environment of the Division of XXX at XXX University for its leading research in the area of discrete event systems. As an important research project in the Division of XXX, the study on discrete event systems, especially in the field of optimization of stochastic hybrid systems, has made great progress in recent years. Attracted by these achievements, I would like to formally ask for your consideration to accept me into the XXX Laboratory to continue my work in the area of discrete event systems, and would like to invite Prof. XXX to kindly consider being my supervisor.
Through participating in your research, I can combine the optimization problem in dis-crete event systems and the study on complex networks, and place my research focus on optimizing event-driven complex and neural networks. By investigating multiple influences, such as parameter uncertainty, time delay, and communication constraints on system performance, I believe my study will broaden the research on discrete event systems. My capability and dedication to scientific research has been proven by my solid ascending academic grade during my undergraduate studies.
