Right from my childhood days, I was interested in anything related to science & technology. The emergence of science and technology has had immense impact on mankind in recent years. I always wondered how simple electronic devices work and the limitless possibilities of the upcoming field of digital electronics really excited me. The vocational electronics course that I took in my Higher Secondary School laid the foundation of my career in the field of science & technology.
The next logical step was an Engineering degree which would help me to begin a career in the technology field. I completed Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering course from A.C. Patil College of Engineering, affiliated to the prestigious Mumbai University. The rigorous curriculum helped me understand the working of basic building blocks of all electronics devices like logic gates, amplifiers & microprocessors, and also how these building blocks work together to build up today's most advanced computers & other electronic devices.
My final year project was at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai which is one of the leading research organizations in India. The project goal was to build a system which would receive raw data from multiple sensors at high speeds, store and process the data stream in real time. The software module of this project consisted of processing the data-stream to provide real-time monitoring & near-real-time pattern analysis. The sheer potential & challenges of processing huge amounts of data in near-real time really excited me. To work around the limitations of large data stream mining inherent in the traditional multi-pass algorithms & the poor query performance for data streams, I implemented the sliding window algorithm to store the last 100 samples of data in memory. These samples were then used to create histograms, aggregations & capture information about anomalies in the input data stream. The front-end JAVA application provided options for real-time monitoring and pattern analysis of the derived data in near-real time. The JAVA & Advanced JAVA course that I attended at NIIT, Mumbai helped me in this regard.
The positive learning experience that I had during this project left a lasting impression on my mind & I decided to choose a career in software industry. On completion of Engineering course, I was offered a position at Accenture Services India Ltd. & Infosys Technologies Limited. I started my career with Accenture as an Associate Software Engineer. Our 3 month rigorous induction program covered topics like Algorithms, Operating Systems, Programming basics, Data warehousing Concepts & Software Development Life Cycles. The subjects like Computer Organization & Architecture and Computer Networking that I studied during Engineering helped me a lot during this time. I specialized as a Microsoft SQL Server Developer & Administrator and was the topper of the induction training batch. My first project at Accenture was with Microsoft, where I worked on upgrading the architecture of the system for collection, processing & reporting of worldwide Microsoft Sales data. My job involved interaction with Business teams to understand the data dependencies & the business requirements, and creating detailed plans to upgrade the existing system architecture to incorporate these requirements. Initially, our team worked on database design where I got a chance to implement High Availability and Disaster Recovery Plans using SQL Server features like Log shipping & Database Mirroring. I got a chance to compare different strategies for indexing & statistics and their impact on query performance. Presently, I am working on implementing Clustering as a High Availability solution on the Windows Server platform. During my 2 years 9 months of tenure at Accenture, I have worked on different aspects of system architecture & design, especially in a distributed environment. I have developed a deep passion for not just database design, but for design of the entire distributed system. I have been awarded the Rising Star & ASE Achievers Award for my commitment & technical expertise, which was followed by promotion to Software Engineer. I am also a Microsoft Certified Technology Professional for SQL Server.
I strongly believe that the XYZ course at the XYZ University, with its emphasis on fundamental subjects like Operating Systems, SDLC, Computer Networks & Security along with the exposure to latest research topics will help me gain sound knowledge about all the components involved in a software architecture, and help me tremendously in building a lasting career in this industry.
In the long term, I would like to be a knowledgeable professional who is an expert in his area of specialization and gives back to the community as much as he can. In this regard, I am an active member of technology discussion groups in my organization. I am also an active participant of The Data Warehousing Institute & would like to contribute significantly to other professional communities in future.
