Hello ,

I am applying for fall 2012. I am running out of ideas for my Statement of Purpose. I think I need a fresh pair of eyes to look into it now. I still think there is an abrupt change from one paragraph to another, no smooth transition. Comments and ideas will be appreciated.

Thank you :)

My undergraduate education has taught me principles and theories, yet I have had only a few chances to apply to this knowledge to obtain any tangible product. I consider my undergraduate education to be a stepping stone to graduate school, after which I can apply my knowledge and experience in a corporate environment.

Being born in a family which always stressed the importance of education, I have had the right atmosphere to focus on my academic pursuits. Engineering has never been a compulsion for me , but has rather been a passion. This passion for engineering coupled with hard work accounts for me being a topper consistently in my university. Being in the National Cadet Corps for two years has taught me that discipline and hard work in the right direction always leads to success.

Being quite obsessed with perfection, I have always wondered how huge manufacturing units and factories with more than 15-20 departments achieve efficiency in their production line. My interest in Industrial Engineering gained fresh impetus when I started my second year of undergraduate studies in one of the best technical environments - BITS Pilani , Dubai. Subjects like linear optimization, operations research, quality control, process planning, etc. inspired me, compelling me to take seek extended knowledge outside the realm of my syllabus.

I had first-hand experience on how operations research and lean manufacturing systems fit in the entire production system when I worked for GB Industries, an ancillary unit of BHEL in India. By exploring trade-offs between metal wastage and speed, between worker fatigue and efficiency of the system , I created a program which was capable of optimizing them and thus using them efficiently. I had to take decisions favourable to both the upper management and the lower management. Working here exposed me to concepts of shift scheduling, quality control and production planning. I feel I gained significant insight into how industrial engineers especially ergonomists think and analyse problems, insights which will certainly help me succeed in my future work.

My work with AIESEC International, the world's largest run student organization, has I feel provided me an amazing opportunity to experience the cultural diversity in the UAE . Working as a project manager I was involved in Corporate Social Responsibility events for major companies in and around the United Arab Emirates. Our main focus was on women empowerment, youth to entrepreneurship and micro-finance. Working alongside with people from many different cultures/nations has given me the unique chance to impact society in a positive way. Motivating young people and working on life changing projects like AIDS campaigns, "Light a Life" [for underprivileged children], has been an immensely gratifying experience both professionally and personally.

My first tryst with cutting edge technology was when I was working as a trainee engineer for Al Futtaim Engineering, one of the largest conglomerates in the UAE. I was involved in Building Maintenance Services which eventually led to buildings getting LEED certification. I had the opportunity to help in designing systems which optimized the air flow for air-conditioning , carbon di-oxide levels and power consumption . Working here allowed me to implement my theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios. The silver lining in this internship was when my project got approved for practical use in the company.

I have been a keen follower of the research activities in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. The work done by the Tennabaum Institute fuels my passion to study in such a prestigious school. My main interest lies in Economic Decision Analysis as I feel it will help me further my career the most. I envision a career for myself where I am incharge of making decisions rather than following them, whether it is in research or in industry. The distinguished faculty, superior facilities and the competitive atmosphere at Georgia Tech will help me make the most of my abilities. Further , Georgia Tech has a record of producing engineers with not only a firm academic background but also with entrepreneurial skill. This conforms the most to my life's goals and ambitions. Hence I feel Georgia Tech would be the perfect fit for my aspirations.
