Global UGRAD Program motivation letter

I would be a great participant in the Global UGRAD Program because I have a desire to learn, a desire that transcends what can be garnered from books. Within me there has always been this thirst for knowledge, for connection, to experience the world outside of my proverbial four walls. I believe Global UGRAD can afford me that which I have sought for so long. It is my belief that my participation would help to uplift Global UGRAD's message of education, community, and global responsibility.

Growing up a world where the rampages of war can be seen at every turn I noticed that there was a running thread in all that I saw and heard. Fear. It is the fear of that which we do not know that drives us to see our brothers and sisters as strangers. It is fear that causes us to attack one another without compassion or remorse. It is fear that sits in us like a toad on its nest, heavy, cold, and seeing with blind eyes. I believe that it is the work of everyone as a global citizen to weed out fear and it's brother, ignorance, wherever they may lie. I believe that it is through the illumination of knowledge, of sharing experiences, that allows for a growth that results in a peace. Peace not just within the world because that is far away and we will likely not know such a concept in our lifetimes but finding peace within ourselves and perhaps instilling peace in others we have touched.

Throughout my career as a student I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with several like-minded people who feel similar to the way I do. And, perhaps more succinctly, it is the differences with those who do not see as I do that drives me to believe they way that I do. For instance, look at the political climate in North America. It is a climate that has been sown into the American history of inequality and injustice towards its marginalized citizens. It's election of a sycophant of the Russian government has shown just how insidious fear and ignorance are. All of this because their "majority" population refuses to see the actual majority of the population as anything other than caricatures and stereotypes. I believe none of the world's problems would have resulted from a homogenized people who were aware and compassionate of each other.

I believe my participation in the Global UGRAD Program could help me to achieve the vision that I have of a world where understanding reigns. I believe that as a member of the global community it is my duty to labor towards making this world a better place than when I was born.
