ESSAY:
I am focused on obtaining a master's degree in the field of aerospace engineering, specializing on the optimization of electronic circuits for the subsystems of a nanosatellite. With this I aim at reducing the costs and space of manufacturing nanosatellites while increasing their lifespan. This is a high relevance matter in the field since in the past years agencies are opting for using nanosatellites given their small size and low weight. My work will collaborate to the construction of nanosatellites constellation projects at facilitating the production of fleets while ensuring the correct functioning of each satellite.
Mexico is also building upon this technology, an objective that started in 2019 with the launching of the first Mexican CubeSat (standard nanosatellite) placed in orbit. The CubeSat is called AztechSat-1 and it had involved NASA and the Mexican Spatial Agency (AEM). AEM plans to deploy a communication satellite system by 2030 and, while this goal is attainable by Mexico, we still have a lot of work to do.
When I entered University to study Mechatronics Engineering I joined "UNAM AeroDesign", a team dedicated to design unmanned aerial vehicles where I have created circuits to install a data acquisition system, an automatic pilot and a propulsion system in an aircraft. The biggest challenge has been creating such circuits at the smallest size and weight, since the prototypes need to be the lightest possible. I have also joined two projects that are currently on process. One is called "KuautliSAT el Ulises 2.0", a nanosatellite with a TubeSat configuration that will be placed on orbit. It is being developed at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of UNAM and has the objective of take images from space and test the subsystems inside a nanosatellite. My work there is within the electronics of the power subsystem and I am currently developing a circuit that efficiently stores, regulates and distributes the energy to all the components. The other project is a CubeSAT called K'OTO being developed at the same institution. There I am designing a circuit that assures the correct functioning of the transceiver. When finished, this nanosatellite will travel to Japan where it will be tested to pass certifications and then be launched to the International Space Station.
By doing my graduate studies in a prestigious aerospace program on the U.S I will take advanced courses oriented to my proposed field of research, which will be design a functional circuit that integrates the subsystems of a nanosatellite, specially one that maximizes the power despite the energy extraction given by the solar cells. There are numerous universities in the U.S that have projects with nanosatellites in collaboration with government and private agencies, there I will be able to work on my interests while learning the processes from the most renowned aerospace programs. These processes can go from designing, construction, certification and launching of nanosatellites.
At my returning to Mexico, I wish to seek collaboration with the AEM and other institutions that are working on nanosatellites, adding new and insightful ideas to develop this kind of projects. I want to apply my expertise on the matter to create innovative and operational systems of a nanosatellite in order to set a standardized process that helps replicate more nanosatellites and achieve the goal of having an independent nanosatellite system on space. Additionally, I plan to implement the knowledge learned about space certifications with the purpose of establish a certification center in the country so we can do the verifications of the prototypes in our own country. I am firmly confident that my past experience added with what I can learn in a graduate program in the U.S will help me to achieve the previous objectives and set Mexico as a world recognized country in aerospace
