Book Reports / Essays on either Pride & Prejudice or Much Ado about Nothing [5]

Hi,

I'm a taking an english university course and I have to write an essay on either Jane Austen's novel Pride & Prejudice or Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing.

The topic for P&P concerns Elizabeth's statement that she started to fall inlove with Darcy after visiting Pemberley. How true is this statement? Bascially we would be looking at the chapter that dealt with the visit to Pemberely (ch. 43)

The other topic is eavesdropping in Much Ado...

I'm really stumped because I started writing on one then found I didn't generate good points and left it, then started to write on the other topic and I'm really getting no where.

Please if anyone has a good understanding of both, could you share some ideas with me to get me started on my essay?

Thanks a bunch!

Book Reports / Essays on either Pride & Prejudice or Much Ado about Nothing [5]

Thx for the advice! I did an outline, 1 idea = 1 paragraph with quotations and it went very well :) My essay is done, and was wondering if it was possible to get your feedback on it. How would I send it to you? By private message?

Thanks again for all your help!

Writing Feedback / What's important: get up early and programm your works and you will never let yourself to be lazy [2]

When I sleep in most mornings, I feel that I miss out on a lot and at times, I feel that time went by very quickly, that I didn't get to enjoy my day to the fullest. Health wise, I believe it is better to wake up when most people wake up and go to sleep when most people do as well.

I think it is also best to start the day as early as possible, regardless if one is a morning or night person. That leaves you with more time to plan out your day and gives you ample time if you want to take a break from a busy schedule with plenty of time remaining to complete your tasks; especially if those involve errands to places that are not open at night.

As for waking up later in the day and staying up late at night, I am all against it. I have tried it and it didn't do me any good. A person operates best, and is healthy, when he/she gets plenty of sleep (or as much sleep as possible), especially at night because as you know it, it is much quieter and you are more likely to have a better night's sleep at night than in the morning when everyone is getting to work or school.

In the end, a person's school or work schedule is what determines how early a person wakes up and how late a person sleeps. The secret will be to find a balance between the two that best works for the person's mind, body and health.

Scholarship / optimistic look to the future [2]

It is hard to be optimistic these days, but we must for life to go on. I do agree with you that religion falls first, because that's your basis in life. You don't just live just for the sake of living, there is a purpose in your life to guide you in the right path. If you always remember God, God will always remember you.

Next comes family and friends. If you are good to them, are there for them, and have a good relationship with them, you will always find them when you need them the most. If you have caring and loving family/friends, then you are less likely to be pessimestic in life.

Have a positive outlook in everything. Even when things don't work out the way you want them to, if you are destined to have it you will get it, and if you are not, then it wasn't meant to be and don't fret about it. Everything happens for a reason and we have to be thankful and look at the bright side of things even if they don't seem so bright to begin with.

Book Reports / Essay - Impulsiveness: Romeo and Juliet [6]

Hi,

I'm working on an essay that is focusing on impulsiveness in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I want to avoid focusing on the characters of Romeo and Juliet, because it is mostly a given. Instead, I would like to focus on minor characters, possibly Tybalt, the Friar, and the nurse perhaps.

Any suggestions on how I tackle this essay, or even if there are better characters that I can use for this analysis?

Your help is much appreciated!

Thank you in advance,

Dora

Writing Feedback / Toefl : Teachers should not make their social or political view known to students.. [5]

Hi, I'm not sure if you wanted our opinion on this question or if you wanted someone to proof read your remarks, but I do agree that teachers should not make their social or political view known to students for the same reasons that you have stated.

School is strictly a place for students to receive an education and be able to apply their knowledge in the work world. Unless the course deals with politics, I believe only then students should be able to take part in debates without the influence of the teacher because, after all, the teacher is the most knowledgeable and students will easily be influenced by the teacher's opinion. This can work in favour of the student as well as against him/her. That is why it's best to avoid having the teacher give his/her opinion on the onset.

Very interesting question indeed! I'm sure many debates have risen from this question.

Book Reports / King Lear - is there meaning or value in the deaths in King Lear? [7]

Hi,

I have a big paper due for King Lear; about ten pages. There are ten deaths in the play and some take place on stage and others off stage. The key question is: Characters (and audience) seek to find meaning or value in death (theirs or others'). Are there any in the play? Discuss.

The ten deaths are those of King Lear and his three daughters, Gloucester and Edmund, Cornwall and his servant, Oswald, and the unnamed character that kills Cordelia.

What do you suggest I should do to tackle this?

I have basically tried to make some sense of how does one define death to have meaning? what makes death meaningful?

I think it's difficult to say whether someone's death has value without looking at the prior sequence of events up to the last moment of the character's Being. And for death to have meaning, I believe two things should occur:

1) transgression followed by transformation must take place up to the point of death
2) death must teach the audience and/or other characters in the play

(I think a theorist said this if I'm not wrong, I just can't remember who!)

Do you think that's a sufficient way of qualifying death as valuable or insignificant?

I wanted to focus on Lear, Gloucestor, Edmund...do you think that's enough?

Thank you for your help in advance! I look forward to hearing your thoughts :)

Book Reports / King Lear - is there meaning or value in the deaths in King Lear? [7]

Thanks for your advice, yes I see your point about teaching a lesson!

I was thinking of using Aristotle's definition of Tragedy, that basically character comes second to plot (actions and incidents in the play) and incorporate that in my essay.

I just need more feedback, possibly from someone that has read the play because I'm having a lot of trouble :(
