Undergraduate / 'my default to take action against the injustice' - risk, achievement common app [3]

this is my first draft so i know its kinda diffused...please give me some suggestions!:)

ESSAY PROMPT:Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

We have been taught to stick up for righteousness, for justice, for equality, for the good. We picture ourselves as the protagonist in our life's story, the brave, and the altruistic hero that manages to overcome all obstacles and prevail against all the evil in the world. We paint ourselves a bright picture of how we will approach the world when we are older, of how we might save the day, only to find that making that right decisions is not as easy as the comic books have portrayed it to be.

Chi- shang was a girl in my class that has always kept to herself. Since elementary school she has been on the peripheral of the school's social life. Needless to say she was not the captain of the cheerleading squad or the student body president, but from my occasional interactions with her, she was a considerate and sensitive person. Unfortunately, in the tenth grade she was bullied on and publically humiliated by a group of senior. When I first became aware of the situation, I hesitated as to what I was supposed to do.

As a teenager, the pressure of fitting in in school, of being accepted, of wearing the right clothes, even saying the right words is overwhelming at times. Paradoxically, I tried to discover who I truly am, yet at the same time, I wanted to be like everybody else; I wanted to be labeled as a "mainstreamer" and from time to time, I could not figure out how to compromise the two identities. I did not always live up to my childhood expectations as the altruistic comic book hero who gives doing the right thing no second thought. For a couple weeks I persuaded myself that there was nothing I could do about the situation Chi-shang was in, for I was neither Peter Parker nor Batman. There was no way I could single handedly take down a group of gargantuan seniors. I was in a dilemma. I was terrified by the prospect of receiving the same treatment if I stood up for the boy, but I knew I was better than an indifferent person.

For a while I had convinced myself that everything would be alright, that the bullies would eventually stop until one day I found Chi- shang crying in the bathroom. Chi-shang told me that the situation only got worse as time went on. She was disheartened by the apathy of the world around her. She felt as if her world was collapsing, that there was nothing to live for. Her words had struck me hard. By turning a blind eye, I was no better than the bullies. I walked away even when I knew someone was drowning. It was then did I finally find the courage to face my conscience. I decided I would introduce Chi-shang to my friends. I would show the people around me just how awesome this girl was. Although it took some time, Chi- shang eventually won over my friends. My friends and I showed the bullies that Chi-shang was not alone, that there were people looking out for her. And the bullying ended.

Looking back, I now realize that my default to take action against the injustice was a nothing but cowardness. Temporizing is no better than actually inflicting, for not taking action equals tacit approval. Being a good person is not just acknowledging the injustice around oneself or feeling sorry for what happens, but to have the courage to stand up against the darkness. We often seek a superhero to come and save the day, but that only happens in science fictions. In reality, we have to be the light in the world we want to see.

you have good writing overall but I agree with Emily. I think you should find something more recent to write about. Maybe find something you are even more passionate about and add more details or descriptions of emotion then the essay will really scintillate!:)

To whom it may concern,

I'm writing this reference letter at the request of Mr. David Liu who is applying for a PhD program at your university.

I am his lecturer for one of his courses Multimedia Coding & Processing and the supervisor for his final year project (FYP) Object Detection with Flexible Part-based Models.

David drew my attention first in my class in the autumn semester of 2010. The reason is not because of David's good scores of the examination in my course but his outstanding performance in the projectsassignedinside my course .

Thisthere was a project about designing a photo ranking system. In this project, students are expected to develop a photo quality evaluation system, based on the two papers of this area and the lecture notes prepared by me. In order to inspire students to make the use of their intelligence and potential, there are four types of bonus rewards for the groups with the best, second best and third best performance, and the most innovative browsing interface group.

David managed to accomplish his work after understanding the content of papers, extracting the key ideas from them and implementing the photo ranking system in Matlab. What David impressed me most was that his group not only got the bonus for the most innovative browsing interface, but also obtain the bonus for the second best performance. He was the exceptional student who got 2 bonuses simultaneously in my class and thus ranked first in my class undoubtedly.

During the process of doing this project, David was not satisfied by only comprehending the essence of the papers. He searched the relevant literature for new photo ranking features as well, and integrated them with the old ones into his system successfully. That was why he could enhance the overall accuracy of his photo ranking system significantly and achieve the better performance over other groups of students, which also demonstrated his strong interest to explore new stuff and self-motivated independent learning ability. Moreover, David put much effort and spent many hours on this project, so he was able to develop a brilliantly attractive and compelling website to manifest the ranking results of his system. He showed his enthusiasm and dedication to this course and his performance really surpassed my expectation, though it was a project in undergraduate level.( i think you should rephrase this last sentence. my suggestion would be something like: even though he is only an undergraduate student, he manged to produce work of profound insight and in depth analysis...something like this)

This summer David contracted me and asked me to be the supervisor of his final year project (FYP). Convinced by David's excellent academic performance during his career of undergraduate, I asked my Phd student Wanli Ouyang to arrange a project about object detection for him. David worked on a research project focusing on object detection with flexible part-based models, building up small part models for pose estimation in multi-resolution and integrating features to form composite models.

Just after acquiring a general description of the project, David searched the literature for many papers on that subject and read them carefully on his own initiative, so he could ask good questions and appear well-prepared in the following meetings. In addition, David often took the initiative to acquire a better knowledge of more advanced topics and to derive new hypotheses after copious reading and contemplating, which had not been proved practically but showed his creativity and competence in independent thinking. Though his research project is still on the way, he has shown the predilection for exploring something new and educating himself suggesting the potential of a good researcher.

In addition, David kept a nice relationship with his FYP partner, Bing Xu. David had the ability to pull his own weight on the project and to compromise with Bing on several occasions. Bing and David decided by themselves to work on different aspects under the same project, so as to make progress more efficiently. David focused more on developing part models in multi-resolution, while Bing concentrated more on extracting new features and integrating them together. Until now they cooperate with each other well and they are engaged in their own part.

In summary, David is clearly the best student I have met among the batch of his department. I am confident that David will become a good Phd student. Hence I hope David can start his new adventure in your university.
