I try to always start with a short story or anecdote to really get the reader's attention. Then I slowly give more information about myself so my audience can relate to my story better as they find out more about me. It's always worked for my style of writing and I usually get good feedback.

You should definitely have a more creative introduction or else you will bore your reader. These people are looking for outstanding students and you have to prove you are the deserving one. Let them know they wouldnt waste their money with you!

You could begin the essay by describing that time when your friend was hospitalized for drug abuse.( what you saw, how you felt, your reactions) Throughout the essay you could show how that influenced/ inspired you to study psychology. Or you could use your cousin as an example. be creative!
