Undergraduate / MARKETING MAJOR! 'I have always been a foodie' [2]
prompt 1- What is your intended major? discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any
experience you have had.
I admit, I have always been a foodie. My two biggest passions growing
up were playing high school basketball and eating. There was one ice
cream store that stood secluded from the main shopping center across
the street from our high school. No one knew about it but a few of the
basket players; It was our haven, it was Chino Hills ice cream shop.
Entering this shop now , I feel nostalgia creeping up as I browse
around the store, however, back in high school this store was on the
verge of bankruptcy. At the time,It had a few young, repetitive
customers but not enough to generate revenue. I noticed that these
loyal customers were untapped potential and exposure of the store at
our high school would increase customer flow at the shop. I proposed
establishing an agreement with our coaches to sell at our games. The
Idea was not only successful, it was the right type of branding that
allowed the shop to become a mecca for high school students
Fast forward a few years later, I began working at California
Terriyaki Grill restaurant. Although the food was phenomenal and
healthy, the newly opened store was in no competition with the
surrounding, more established, restaurants. The high prices and the
unfamiliarity of the product were key reasons that deterred college
students from this eatery. Stringing along aside my supervisor we
discussed about temporary discounts, student discounts, free samplers
and budget friendly meals for students. After taking the initiative
to personally implement free samplers to familiarize potential
customers there were new faces walking in the store. After the
supervisor saw this change, he agreed to give 10% off to students, and
created budget friendly meals. By implementing small marketing
strategies, the store was able grasp onto a large sector of audience
that would have shied away from the expensive prices.
These experiences cultivated my curiosity about how our economy
strives even when unemployment is at an all time high, the answer
being marketing. Marketing is a very powerful industry that is the
driving force of our economy. Although competitive and cut throat this
industry is for out of the box innovators and fast paced learners who
can establish a brand , research trends and longevity of a product.
As technology keeps innovating new opportunities are created for
marketing majors. Although inexperienced in this field, I feel that my
consistency in collaborating and executing ideas in order to generate
profits and establish brands is a tool that will only strengthen,
given that I solidify my educational background.
