Undergraduate / To shape myself / common App; Personal statement [2]
Hi, I am trying to write a personal statement, but I am from Poland and I don't even know If the essay I wrote is appropriate. Please help me.
"Let my own shape be born of me, let me not owe my formation to anyone" (Gombrowicz, Witold. Ferdydurke. Trans. Eric Mosbacher). Being simultaneously an author, a narrator and a main character of composition allows me to freely create my own form and produce a completely new picture of myself in somebody's eyes. I can make myself familiar with opinions about me, recognize what other people want me to do, how they want me to behave, and finally become acquainted with social roles which I play for my family, teachers and friends. I can balance them all , create a suitable compromise and write it down. I am fully capable of doing sohowever the question is whether it would still be about me. By doing this I may become just another compromise, someone fully adapted to an imposed form.
Form - a term created by Witold Gombrowicz in a novel entitled "Ferdydurke" - is a manner of acting, a mask, which every person wears during social intercourse. Mostly based on cultural patterns, a form can take various forms, with one certainty: escaping from it is not possible, because even the escape itself is the form.
Therefore, when I want to show myself in advantageous light, I can take the appropriate form and become a diligent student, a doting daughter or a helpful friend. Even if I am a little bit of each , none of these forms show who I really am.
This is the reason why I want to choose from all my roles and masks only these ones, which I find relevant and fitting. I want them to reflect the person I am or I may become. I hope that I can avoid being just another compromise, a shape meeting expectations of other people yet not meeting my own, and finally someone deprived of uniqueness and character.
...my name is Alicja. I love eating chocolate ice cream while watching falling snow. I dream about going to Wacken Open Air 2013, in order to put a postcard from the festival on the desk in my own law office sometime in the future. Eventually, if there is no escape from the form, I want to shape my own so it would be like a comfortable, airy summer dress rather than a tight corset.
