An M.Sc. in International Business Management and Innovation at the various UK universities that I am applying for will be an opportunity for me to enrich my knowledge, gain extensive competence for future academic research and professional work with which I would use to contribute to the socioeconomic development of my country Nigeria. My career path is such that, after my studies, I want to be a cosmetician who will champion the production and use of natural based cosmetics rather than carcinogenic based ones. It is a fact that anything applied to our skin is quickly absorbed through our pores directly into our blood stream and many cosmetics are carcinogenic which increases the chances of developing cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, 30 people die from cancer everyday in Nigeria. Thus, production of 100% natural based cosmetics which I have been working on will be of great benefit in reducing the absorption of hazardous substances in our body. Though some cosmetic industries use little amount of these substances such as hydroquinone, lead, parabean, that it's flagged as non harmful to the body because the effects are only tested for a short term period. Continuous usage of such product mixed with other harsh substances from other products in a long term (e. g 20 years) has not been tested and could result to cancer since the body intake has become mass.

Upon returning to my home country after studies, I would love to work with a production organisation where I can put into practice what I have learnt during my studies, in order to gain professional experience and practical knowledge in business creation, implementation and managing projects. The aim of this is that, after a period of about 3 years of working, I intend to dedicate my time in building up my company, Sophytrick Creative Factory which is a growing film and beauty makeup brand that I established, with the aims of; raising awareness on the dangers of carcinogenic cosmetics by partnering with NGOs, IGOs, government and private organisations, and the benefits of natural based cosmetics, tackle poverty in my own capacity by creating job opportunities and improve healthy living through production of natural based cosmetics in line with what the UK government is doing in Nigeria.

I hope to set up an official academy to train more people in the production of natural based cosmetics and application of makeup and special effects while attracting partner organisation and individuals that will empower the unemployed by providing startup capitals for low capital intensive business, as this would enable them work independently and create more job opportunities for themselves and others. I hope to build a brand that extends beyond the Nigerian context which will also improve cultural relations.

If selected for chevening, it will equip me with skills to forge my company ahead and serve as a platform to help me bring to life ideas and visualized plan that will in the end help my country and humanity.

Leadership and Influence Essay

Leadership to me is an ability to influence or inspire people and change their lives positively. Thus, leadership for me is inherent as I strive to change the world around me. As a girl, I dreamt of creating job opportunities in my country where the unemployment is on the high side.

I have been able to lead and influence which is evident in my career endeavours as a film and Beauty Makeup artist. I was the best in the department of Theatre and Film studies Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka from 2012 to 2015 earning admiration from students and lecturers. I coached my fellow students on how to create realistic makeup effects for stage/ movie productions as well as Beauty Makeup. Three from my class motivated, have chosen a career as makeup artist while my department has improved greatly in stage makeup.

After graduation, I started working on Nollywood movie sets. I employed two friends who had little Knowledge of makeup as my assistants. Today, they are both trending as a Makeup artists.

During my mandatory one year National Youth Service, I served as a classroom teacher at The Ambassadors College Ota, where I tutored the whole junior secondary (18 classes) Cultural and Creative Arts twice a week and their performance was incredible. I also trained three fellow Corp members on Makeup application. Alongside, I was part of an organising committee in my Community Development Service group which organised a sensitization on The Importance of Culture in secondary schools. We also created awareness on a tourism potential we discovered which could be beneficial to my country.

I have also impacted lives through community theatres. My group in school effected change in Umuogbu community Awka by cleaning up their dirty environment and managing their waste disposal of which they later joined in the following week. The program was aimed at reducing Malaria and Typhoid in that community through participation and dramatic activities. We also used drama as a propaganda in Amawbia community on the issue of land thievery which was their major problem. My group also visited primary schools where we used drama, poems and storytelling sessions to teach morals and help in difficult topics.

I took part in organising a digital literacy program (Django Girls) which was spearheaded by my sister at Awka. The project was aimed at bridging gender gap in the technical world.

Currently, I have my company name registered (Sophytrick Creative Factory) and still working hard to establish it fully. I have been able to reduce unemployment rate in my little way by employing two people who I also train in the process and having trained (7) people who are now independent of which more are yet to enroll. Am only but happy that am able to inspire people around me. Being selected for Chevening will not only advance my leadership and influence ability, it would allow me meet and be part of young leaders who will shapen my country in our time.
