Undergraduate / Lianhegonghui Volunteer League- extracurricular activity [4]

I set up Lianhegonghui Volunteer League in grade 10 to draw more attention and offer more chances for my schoolmates to community and volunteer activities, and I served as the president of the SUS for a year. We regularly organized students to visit empty-nester and widowed senior citizens, to play with the disable and handicapped children in the Sun Village, to activate fund-raising for people in need, to clear the litter in the travel sites, to help the community in the area to make posters and slogans, etc. Every season we have a focused topic and we will have the above activity every week. Only in 2 months, my SUS grows to a super-big club in our school with 600 enrolled members. At the end of the year, out of 50 newly-setup students society, SUS is awarded as the most potential Society of the year.

12th, May, the catastrophic earthquake in Wen Chuan occurred. 13th, May, I convened the urgent meeting for the Board of "Long Hao Second-hand Book Company", a company I set up with 11 partners to deal with the used books on campus 2 months ago. The only topic of the urgent meeting was my proposal to donate all the profits (16,000 Rmb) to the victims. h

Howeverthey did not concur immediately and some of them even kept silence as rejection. I could not help to pound the table and exploded all my outrage and disappointment, forgetting all of them were my brothers to build a same dream. 14:00, 21st, May, the second meeting of the board after the earthquake. "I made the right decision", I murmured to myself continuously outside the room. "dear bothers! We have a dream, not a dream to make big money, but a dream to actualize ourselves in the society. Here is a perfect chance for our self-actualization: to help those who need our hands right now. And also, don't forget, we are not kids any more. We are big enough to take our responsibility to the society..." Silence! The result was unanimous but I knew some of my brothers agreed for fear of more disputes. And another unanimous vote was to close Long Hao.

My first start-up in business lost. Sad? Of course. For a long time, I even did not want to mention it. But a year later, when I finally strong enough to introspect, I found I gained more than what thought to belost. The basic process to start a business, the first-hand understanding of book industry, the strategy to negotiate with different people, the way to lead a team with the same dream, the sense of accomplishment after the tears and sweat, all of those are invaluable treasures of my life. But if I got the chance to do it all again, I would definitely make the same choice, because most of all, I understand that everybody has his responsibility to the society, no matter young or old, no matter rich or poor, no matter hero or loser. Perhaps I will never become a hamlet next time!
