Letters / Thanusan - Scholarship Essay - letter of reference by self [2]

Hi,

I'm applying to a scholarship. Here's the question:

Write a letter of reference for yourself in the third person describing how the applicant (you) meets these criteria.

The letter should refer to the specific achievements and experiences. It may also comment on any weaknesses. (300 word maximum)

Having known Thanusan personally for years, I feel he possesses several traits that would make him a good addition to the community of Pearson scholars.

An attribute of his personality that would surely prove useful in university studies is his academic stamina and desire to learn constantly. In Year 12, he decided to study the A Level Mathematics course independently. By staying committed to learning a course spanning two years, he displayed intellectual endurance and a belief to tackle challenges. Therefore, it was only expected when he scored 4 A's in the AS examinations, the only result of its kind at school.

In 2020, he was unanimously elected School Head Boy after being a prefect for four years, and led the Student Council appreciably throughout the year. A highlight of his tenure was founding the AUS Wellbeing and Happiness Club, with the primary goal of ensuring students were mentally healthy enough to allow undisturbed focus on academics. As part of the club's activities, he led his team in carrying out surveys, holding assemblies and assisting any affected students. Thanusan often organizes learning sessions on Zoom, where he mentors peers in subject matters. Currently, he is an e-Cadet, where he helps organize school events and represents the school in external functions.

Thanusan is keen on expanding his knowledge beyond the boundaries of the textbooks. During the summer break, he undertook an eight-week course in nanotechnology, from Duke University. This course greatly benefited him, as he gained useful insight into the technologies used in biomedical engineering to diagnose diseases. Additionally, he is currently working on the Cambridge EPQ, an independent research project, where he looked to explore the possibility of modifying RNA to treat cancers. Being the IOF Olympiads national champion in Cyber and English (2018), MaRRS National Math Bee Champion in 2017, and three-time Royal Spelling Bee winner, he also values testing his knowledge on a national scale.

He also enjoys giving back to the local community- he has volunteered in several cleanup campaigns and walks for education and diabetes awareness, and was the flagbearer at the Sri Lankan Independence Day Celebrations. Thanusan also represents the U-19 team of YTCA Dubai in provincial tournaments, and would definitely love playing for Toronto's cricket team.

Going by the above, I firmly believe Thanusan will add academic, leadership and creative value to the community of Pearson scholars.

The main issues are, my answer is way over the limit at 391 words - do any sections appear unnecessary? Should I focus on only two or three achievements, since the word limit is small? Thanks in advance!
