Chevening Essay on Leadership and Influence - Cybersecurity Background [2]
I am confident that leadership is my core strength, developed through experiences where it was crucial rather than just advantageous. When I began university, the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted the global economy, compelling me to adapt quickly to living independently both financially and personally. During this challenging period, a friend with a small startup sought my assistance to sustain their business amid economic difficulties and restrictions on in-person meetings. Appointed as Project Manager, I was tasked with developing an AI-powered public speaking application. This project required not only technical expertise but also strategic leadership to navigate the digital transformation of a traditional business model.
In this role, I led a team through the entire development process, from ideation to implementation. I was responsible for ensuring that the project met its goals within tight deadlines and budget constraints. My leadership efforts resulted in a successful product launch, which not only increased the company's revenue stream but also expanded the team from 3 to 10 employees. Additionally, we secured funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, which was instrumental in scaling the project further. This experience taught me valuable lessons in managing teams, coordinating with stakeholders, and driving innovation under pressure.
At university, I also had the privilege of leading the Research and Development Directorate of the Association of Computer Engineering Students. This role focused on advancing information security through various initiatives. I oversaw the organization of seminars, workshops, and a Capture the Flag (CTF) competition named EXPXX. These events were designed to provide newcomers with practical cybersecurity skills and foster a strong community of emerging professionals. Leading these initiatives required not only technical knowledge but also the ability to motivate and guide a diverse group of students, ensuring that each event achieved its educational objectives.
In my current role as a Threat Detection & Response Specialist at a leading XXX, my leadership skills are integral to my success. I am responsible for identifying and addressing complex cybersecurity threats, often leading my team during high-stress incident responses. For example, during a sophisticated phishing attack, I coordinated a rapid and effective response, guiding my team through a series of tactical decisions that prevented any data breaches. This role has enhanced my ability to inspire and motivate my team, ensuring that we work cohesively to protect our digital infrastructure and maintain operational integrity.
