Graduate / Doctorate degree, knowledge in materials chemistry: The benefit for my country. [5]

Hi, I am trying to finish my Essay.

"I would like to gain a deeper knowledge in materials chemistry by taking PhD in the United States. This country has many universities that offer research intense programs in material chemistry that focuses in design and synthesis of new materials by applying a variety of disciplines such as polymers, inorganic, biotechnology and engineering. These studies are supported by expert professors, good curriculum and complete laboratory facilities. I believe that would be the best place for me to be.

I believe with my Doctorate degree, I can contribute significantly for research in Indonesia more than now. I want to raise the research in Indonesia that is recognized internationally. The research in Indonesia is only following the trend and very few Indonesian scientists are internationally recognized. This is due to a lack of government attention to the world of research that appeared to lack of funds allocated for research. According to Wise list of Index of Leading Scientists and Engineer issued by COMSTECH (Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation), only 6 of Indonesia recognized scientists in the world of over 200 million inhabitants of Indonesia. From the number of international papers published, the productivity is very low. According to a scientific institution, Thomson Scientific based in Philadelphia, United States, from the number of scientific papers published in international journals, Indonesian State ranks fourth in the ASEAN with a difference of paper number far enough from 3rd rank. Hence, I aspired to becoming a scientist and with real achievement and I dreamed that one day Indonesia will become world center for research."

Scholarship / Research objective for PhD Scholarship in Material Chemistry [NEW]

I wish to continue my study by pursuing magister degree in Material Science and Engineering. I interested in this filed since I was doing my final project for my bachelor degree at The Bandung Institute of Technology, Major in Chemistry. I developed new type of carbon paste electrode for determination of Pb, Cu, and Hg by Square Wave Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (SWASV). To enhance the performance of carbon paste electrode, I modified the surface of electrode by lignin compound. From the measurement of Pb in solution, the modified electrode has better sensitivity 1.6 times than before. The lignin coated on the surface of electrode act as chelating agent that improves the interaction between electrode and metallic ions. Therefore, the accumulation step of metals on the modified electrode is better than before and hence improves the sensitivity of measurement.

After graduated from Bachelors degree, I work as a chemist. My responsibility is developing the formulation of acrylic based polymer as binding agent to be applied in paint, textile, and paper industries. I have developed a dust suppressant polymer based to be applied in coal mining areas located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The type of polymer and its composition affect the performance of dust suppressant. The field test results show that the use of polymers as dust suppressant suppresses the formation of dust particles more effectively up to 70% and more durable than water, therefore reducing the frequency of watering that impact on cost efficiency. As a chemist, I have to be able to operate analytical instruments such as, Gas Chromatograph, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Particle Size Analyzer, and so on. I have to assure the instrument work properly by calibrating and maintaining its performance. Besides that, I have to validate and verify new method before applied for analysis.

I would like to gain a deeper knowledge in Material science and it would be a good chance for me if I get the opportunity to continue my study at XXX Institute of Science and Technology. With my strong foundation in chemistry and my work experience in electrochemistry and polymer, I strongly believe that I will be able to perform my best in pursuing magister degree. By pursuing magister degree in Material Science and Engineering will provide the opportunity for me to raise the research development in my beloved country, Indonesia.
