Prompt: The one- to two-page statement of purpose should address your reasons for applying to MassArt, your choice of a specific discipline, and the direction of future work. You also may want to comment on recent developments that support your decision to apply.
Answer: I have made mass art my number one choice of schools to apply to. Because of its location and all the opportunities I will have has an artist to develop and build my skills, To help me obtain a career in the art's. I guess you could call me a creative melting pot and sponge. I am very interested in creating anything and everything. Some of my personal interests that have shaped my art and taken it to new levels and helped me develop my one of a kind style. Some of these interest are street art [Multiple types of street art from sticker and posters to large scale murals and aerosol productions as well as street sculptures ], Skateboarding, Graffiti, screen printing, music, tattoos, t-shirt design, print making, designing different types of products likes shoes screen printing methods, skate parks designing and more, Film, video, and photography. I take all the things I learn from this interest and use them to help me create. I'm always trying to learn more and push myself and the boundary's to experiment with what I already know.
I come from a middle class family that moved around from place to place. Like most artist my art work is heavily influenced by my surroundings and my personal experiences. One Major thing in my life that shaped a lot of my work is my father, He has struggled with drug and alcohol problems most of his life. From seeing all the destruction it did to my family my father and especially myself. I watched over the years as my father my hero disappeared until I didn't know him anymore and he didn't know me. I promised myself i would never become someone I could not recognize. I became extremely interested in the straight edge community and hard core music. Straight edge is an alternate life style that is anti-drug and alcohol. One of the other major influences in my life that has really helped me get through so many issues is skateboarding. I became a sponsored skateboarder for a skate shop called True Ride Skate shop when I was about fifteen years old. Skateboarding was the only thing I found that did not care what I was into it always accepted me, it never judged me about anything. I have met my closest friends thru skateboarding and I have been exposed to so much music, art and culture thru it. From skating in so many cities I grew very fond of street art, it amazed me massive posters and sculptors, Tags, aerosol murals and stickers that were on everything, most of them hand drawn one of a kind that were placed in there spots for a reason and purpose left for whoever found them to figure out there purpose and meaning. It was only natural for me to only want to do it myself, I already loved to draw and create things.
I began doing street art when I was thirteen i always had a note book or sketch book with me when I was not skating that I would draw or write in. On day when I was skating I found a Sharpe permanent marker under a bench at one of my favorite skate spots. When I was taking a brake from skating and sitting on the bench I started to draw on the bench I don't know why i did I just felt the urge to draw, so I did. After a while I began to write a nick name my friends had given me. That's what started me tagging which later on developed into me doing more art, like aerosol murals, wheat pasting poster and more. There is really nothing else out there quite like it. It was a way to have a voice in society which not many people actually have the opportunity to have. It has been and has continued to be a way for me to express my beliefs to other in a creative way. Thru posters, sculptures and more. It has allowed me to widen my knowledge and perspective to so many things going around in society today.
From skateboarding I also loved to film and be filmed I also was very fond of photography. Filming and shooting photos were a way capture moments in time about my life and my art work that could not be described with words. I started filming my friends skating it eventually developed into short films with friends and then documentary films about the many different types of life style I Am involved in. Over the next few years I will be filming a documentary about street culture on the east coast. It will include interviews with graffiti artist, people who do action sports, such as skateboarding, BMX bike riding, and other action sports, musicians from multiple types of music, fashion and more. It will also include not only interviews but a day in the life with them all to show how they all harmonize to create a cultural movement. Photography has also been another way of expression for me and a way to capture my memories to share with others.
Design has also played a huge part in my creative background, I have designed multiple products that I eventually one day wish to have produced including collectible toys of art, skate shoes designs, shoe technologies and more. I have designed multiple street art characters for my stickers and posters as well which I will be making the toys modeled after.
From skating I became involved with my towns local and independent effort to help create a new skate park. I helped build and start the skate park for Douglas Massachusetts already so I started to help with the Falmouth skate park. I and 3 of my closest friends wanted to rebuild the Falmouth skate park to better fit the needs of skateboarders because the preexisting park was made for only rollerblader and BMX bike riders even though the town mainly consists of skateboarders. We were also sick of being harassed by police for skating. One day when we were skating we struck the interest of a photographer who worked for a local news paper , He asked to interview us and ask us what we were doing. We told him are ideas about trying to build a new park that was safer larger and better constructed for the locals primarily using it. I made the cover of the paper doing a few big tricks at the park. After a while we started to get more people involved for the skate park to be rebuild. I designed a t-shirt and sticker to be sold to help fundraise for the skate park. We have sold every color run we have done in the shirts and we have sold hundreds of stickers to locals and tourist. The skate park foundation is still raising money for the new park and my friends and I am currently designing the new park that I wish to collaborate with the skate park designers from Gridline, Dreamland, And California Skate parks.
After my success with the t-shirts and stickers I wanted to make my very own clothing company, I started with stencils and spray paint at first. The shirts were not coming out the way I wanted them to look so I sort of veered away from it until I met the owner of DEF COD clothing also owner of DEF COD TATTOO. He showed me the process of traditional screen printing. I have been working with Ben (the owner) for almost a year now I plan on designing a few shirts under the DEF COD name and also expanded with other companies to do collaborations of my art.
It has been very difficult for me to actually achieve so much because of my home life but I try not to get it in the way of my goals. Last year was my senior year in high school and for a large portion of it I was homeless bouncing around from friends house to house or whenever it was nice out I would just camp out . I was applying for schools during that time but because of my financial situation school seemed like an impossible thing at the time. This year I plan to achieve on getting into school and starting my journey to become a better artist and achieve my personal goals and overcome the obstacles I will have to face.
Any kind of help is welcome!
