People attend college or university for many different reasons (for
example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge).

reasons and examples to support your answer.

Nowadays, the more and more people attend college or university after graduating high school. There many different reasons lead them to apply to college or university such as for new experiences, career preparation, increasing knowledge and so on. In my opinion, people attend to college not only to prepare future job but also to get new experiences in the life.

Firstly, the main reason why people attend to college or university is to prepare for future job. From developing countries to developed countries, the requirements for employees are higher and higher. Thus, going to college or university seems be the best way to obtain a good job. College or university is the best place for student to get knowledge needed to future career. It provides not only theory but also practice in specialists such as: chemistry, history, medicines and so on. The people trained in college or university can accustom to future job better than people were not. Therefore, many people go to college or university because of career preparation.

Secondly, some people go to college or university in order to get new experiences and increase knowledge. In college or university, students from many continents, countries, cites with many different cultures join in events, activities, thus every one will have a chance to learn about manners and customs, cultures from many places. Moreover, participating in school activities, students also join organizations to get more experiences from other members. Hence, college seems be a perfect place to get new experiences.

In sum, there are many reasons for people to go to college or university but the major purposes are to prepare for future job and collect new experiences for their life. Nowhere to get these things is better than college and university. Thus, college or university is the suitable place for people to improve themselves.

Writing Feedback / [Argument]The residents of San Perdito should vote Montoya out of office [3]

The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:
"In the first four years that Montoya has served as mayor of the city of San Perdito, the population has decreased and the unemployment rate has increased. Two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened. Under Varro, who served as mayor for four years before Montoya, the unemployment rate decreased and the population increased. Clearly, the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they voted Montoya out of office and reelected Varro."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better its conclusion.

This argument relies on a series of unproven assumptions, which together undermine its conclusion that the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they voted Montoya out of office and reelected Varro. One such assumption is that in first four years Montoya has served as mayor of the city of San Perdito, the population has decreased and the unemployment rate has increased, the number of businesses has decreased. The other assumption is that in past Varro's four year term, the unemployment rate decreased and the population increased. Thus, I would need to know whether more effects are in fact Montoya's term office and in Varro's before I could either accept or reject to vote Montoya out of office and reelect Varro.

Even assuming that Montoya is not successful in the first four year term as mayor of city of San Perdito, the population has decreased and the unemployment rate has increased. However, the trend of population and unemployment is a result of long term process, it might not relate to Montoya's policy in only year of his term. Moreover, I would like to know about birth rate and death rate to conclude whether population has decreased is harmful for the city of San Perdito or not. This assumption also mentions that two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened. It is hard to evaluate whether it is harmful for the city of San Perdito. It only mentions about the quantity of business but not about scale of business, each business has opened might be worthier than two businesses have closed. Therefore, it might not convince residents of San Perdito vote Montoya out of office.

Besides the assumption about the shortcomings of Montoya in his term, other assumption about the success of Varro in his term office. Under Varro, who served as mayor for four years before Montoya, the employment rate decreased and the population increased. However, this assumption did not mention the economical and societal situation of the city of San Perdito before Varro became mayor of the city. Meanwhile, there had not any statistics about the employment rate and the population in the first four years under Varro term, it might not be enough evidence to prove that Varro is more successful in mayor role than Montoya. There still have 3 years for Montoya to get results that Varro did in his term office. Thus, with assumption about the success of Varro might not convince residents vote to reelect Varro.

In sum, the argument is a dubious on that relies on a series of unproven assumptions - about shortcomings of Montoya in first four year term and about the success of Varro in the past. To strengthen the argument, the article should provide better evidence of statistics about birth rate, death rate to deeply understand about the population changes and statistics about the population and the unemployment rate in first four year term of Varro. Even with this additional evidence, with Varro as mayor of the city of San Perdito might not get better result than Montoya did. It's rather clear that this article is weak and unconvincing to residents of the city of San Perdito to vote Montoya out of office and reelected Varro

Writing Feedback / [Analysis of Issue] Schools should be only responsible for academic skills [2]

"Schools should be responsible only for teaching academic skills and not for teaching ethical and social values."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with opinion expressed above. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Because of training needs, schools were established to teach students about some skills. Some people said that schools should be responsible only for teaching academic skills and not for teaching ethical and social values. However, I don't totally agree with this opinion because nowadays, people go to school not only to get good jobs after graduation but also to become useful people for society. Thus, apart from academic skills, people need to be taught ethical and social values.

With people going to schools to get good jobs after graduation, they want to learn academic skills that are needed for future jobs. However, it's only a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition. In fact, there are many people who well trained about academic skills, but still unsuccessful in working. For example, there are two people that graduated the same class with distinctive grades in academic skills, but a person with lower grade in academic skill is still more successful than another. Because they both work in marketing field, in order to succeed in working, they need both academic skills and social knowledge. Academic skills help them to analysis economic issues and social skills help them to understand customer needs. In order to succeed in marketing field, people have to associate with academic skills and social skills. As you know, school is the best place to study ethical and social values.

Admittedly, people go to schools in order to become useful people for society. There are many skills that people need to be studied to improve themselves and school is the best place that taught them. In schools, people study not only academic skills but only ethical and social values. When looking for the answer for the questionnaire "How to become a useful person for society?", people will realize that you have to be responsible not only for their family but also for society. In reality, there are many bad doctors, lawyers who are good at professional knowledge but still damage for their patients or their customers. Because of their private purposes not based on ethical and social values, they are ready to harm others, for example: shielding criminals, swindling money out of patients, and so on. Thus, schools should be responsible for teaching ethical and social values, too.

In sum, the role of school is to train not only academic skills but also ethical and social values. Because people need all skills to improve themselves in order to not only get good jobs but also become useful people. School is the perfect place that people can study these skills.

Writing Feedback / [Analysis of Issue] Humans are becoming subservient to machines [4]

"In this age of automation, many people complain that humans are becoming subservient to machines. But, in fact, machines are continually improving our lives."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Nowadays, machines display more and more important role not only in daily life but also in the manufacturing. I strongly agree that humans are becoming subservient to machines. But, in fact, machines are continually improving our lives. We can see machines in everywhere from our houses to assist housewives to in factories to help workers or engineers in manufacturing.

In the daily life, machines make our life more and more comfortable. With appearing of electrical goods, the housewives can do housework easily such as cooker, oven, microwave, washing machines and so on. It makes housewives save their time and helps them in heavily works. In the past the women used to spend the whole day for housework, but now with the assistance of machines, they have more time to care themselves and also to relax. Machines really change the women's life.

Admittedly, in the education, the role of machines can be denied. When the computer was invented, it contributed to improve the education and assist in teaching more effectively. Nowadays, electronic libraries gradually replace convention libraries in storing books and in searching books. Moreover, with computer connected internet, students can search books from many resources on the internet for studying, and with specialized software of computer, they can do experiment in many areas of sciences such as biology, physics, chemistry and so on. The roles of machines in the education is significant.

In the manufacture, machines exists in all parts of factories. Machines step by step replace workers in produce products on the assembly and workers only operate the machines. Machines prevent workers from danger workspaces such as in construction site, in mine and nuclear reaction pile and so on. With assistance of machines, people can create products with better quality and more plentiful. Machines make manufacturing more and more developed.

In sum, although humans are depending on machines, machines still keep an important role on improving our lives. By machines, people can develop in many areas of life from in daily life to in manufacturing.

Writing Feedback / annual car and truck safety survey - An argument essay [NEW]

Hi all,
I'm newbie here.
Please help me to check my essays
Thanks so much:)

The following appeared in an advertisement for United Motors trucks:
" Last year the local television-news program In Focus reported in its annual car and truck safety survey that over the course of the last ten years United Motors vehicles were involved in at least thirsty percent fewer fatal accidents to drivers than vehicles built by any other single manufacturer. Now United is developing a one of a kind computerized crash warning system for all its trucks. Clearly, anyone concerned with safety who is in the market for a new truck this year should buy a United Motor truck."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

This argument relies on a series of unproven assumptions, which together undermine its conclusion that anyone concerned with safety should buy a United Motors truck. One such assumption is that the survey claims that United Motors vehicles were involves thirsty percent fewer fatal accidents than other vehicles were. The other assumption is that a kind computerized crash warning system which is currently being developed. Thus, I would need to know whether more affects are in fact developing in United Motors before I could either accept or reject United Motors's advertising.

Even assuming that in car-truck safety survey, United Motors trucks are safer than other companies' trucks. However, with the statistic in the ad might not persuade customers to buy United Motors trucks in this year because statistic in survey collected in the past 10 years and might not prove their abilities in present. Moreover, "30%"statistic mentions that thirsty percent fewer fatal accidents to drivers in United Motors vehicles, but this ad for trucks and it might not prove that trucks in United Motors are safer than other manufactures' trucks. If you scrutinized the survey, you would realize that it collected only fatal accidents but not injury. Thus, statistic in survey might not convince customers to buy United Motors truck this year.

Besides the assumption about statistic survey in the ad, other assumption about computerized crash warning system is currently being developed. Nevertheless, this new technology is being researched and developed, not installed in United Motors trucks which is bought this year, it's very difficult to convince customers to buy trucks with this assumption in the ad. Moreover, it might not be enough evidence to prove that with new crash warning system, United Motors trucks would be safer than other manufactures' trucks. This new warning system only warns drivers, but not prevent them from accidents. Therefore, with new technology might not convince customers to purchase United Motors trucks.

In sum, the argument is a dubious on that relies on a series of unproven assumptions - about annual car-struck safety survey, United Motors vehicles thirsty percent fewer fatal accidents than other companies' vehicles and new technology is currently being developed in United Motors trucks, crash warning system. To strengthen the argument, the ad should provide better evidence of statistic survey about only truck in recent time. Even with this additional evidence, with new crash warning system is not currently installed this year, It's rather clear that United Motor ad is weak and unconvincing.
