Scholarship / 'I owe the possibility of my dreams to my parents' - Becca scholarship essay [2]

Personal Statement (maximum 250 words): A one-page personal statement that covers all of the following:

a. describe your community involvement, i.e. as volunteer work, or involvement in school or community organizations;
b. discuss how you plan to utilize your education to contribute to the community;
c. reflect on how you chose your career goal (i.e. being a doctor, teacher, etc.);
d. and explain how you will further the goals of the BECA foundation upon completion of your education (focus on one of our vision statements).

THE BECA Foundation (vision statements)
- Will decrease the drop-out rate among Latino students
- Will increase the number of Latino Professionals in the community
- Will make the "Possible Dream" of higher education a reality for Latino students
- Will become financially self-reliant

"Siempre hecha le ganas al estudio mijo." That is what my parents have told me time and time again. A message that any parent can understand. It means always put effort in your school son. They tell me these kind words of advice not only because they are my parents but because they didn't have an opportunity at education. Because they have sacrificed so much so I can have an opportunity for a higher education I plan to strive and persevere to accomplish my goals by obtaining an education, acknowledging the fact that I would most likely not be in school if it hadn't been for my parents who have constantly supported me throughout my life.

I feel that I owe the possibility of my dreams to my parents. And although my parents have been supportive I cannot say the same for others in my community. In the future I plan to pursue a career as a writer and spread the word of my achievements as a Latino writer with hardships to emphasize how others Latinos. My inspiration comes from the great interest and enjoyment writing gave me as a child. My decision to be a writer also comes from and from my volunteering at Youth Voice, a leadership program that has taught me lessons of giving back.

As a future writer I will tell the tales of Latino students like myself and how they became examples of success. As an author I hope to inspire and help my fellow community of diverse and unique culture so that together the doors of opportunity that were previously closed can now be gratefully opened.

Writing Feedback / The Advantages Of Being A Good Speaker [5]

As far I know I think that you have your grammar pretty well done but you should change your writing style for the essay.

"I would like to..." "Today, I will be talking about..." (try and speak more formal instead of something that seems rehearsed.)

"you might find yourself changing someone's.." (talk about about what you wrote applies to you and your message through personal experiences.)
