'currently shadowing a physician assistant' - narrative for PA admissions [NEW]
Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how this sounds. I am quite unsure how to go about writing this because I feel it is a broad topic and I am not the strongest writer. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. This is the narrative portion of the CASPA application for graduate school admissions for physicians assistant and what it asks is "to describe your motivation toward becoming a physician assistant". I am not sure if this essay is concise enough and I would really appreciate the help and any feedback.Throughout my life there have been many changes, but there has always been the consistency for my love of biology; how life came to exist and is somehow so adaptable to fight the unexpected things that come its way. When I was 12 my mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. At such a young age, one cannot understand the devastating effects that this entails; how something that couldn't even be seen can cause so much pain and detrimental effects on the body. I spent many years observing numerous health care facilitators try to heal her with no avail. It was when my mom was at the National Institutes of Health in the last months of her life when it came to me. I watched as the health care associates did all in their power to try and make my mother as comfortable as possible, and try to condone myself and my family that I wanted to do the same thing. My destiny was set that day; I would grow up and do all in my power to help those in need when they are at their most vulnerable.
Time passed and I struggled for a long time with the hardships my family and I had endured, but this event made me stronger and the person I am today. I knew that any obstacle I would try to overcome in my life would be in arms reach.
Soon after I got a job working in an urologist office performing clerical work. I loved reading all the test results and the doctors' reports. I vigilantly watched how the doctors and nurses dealt with patients on a daily basis, as well how the patients dealt with the doctors. It awed me how the doctors and nurses changed the outlook of a patient drastically with comfort and compassion.
During this time I had the opportunity to observe a physician assistant at a local hospital in the pathology department. This was my first encounter with the PA profession and it inspired me. She explained to me how she worked independently yet in close affiliation with a doctor as a team, which I feel is really important for quality care. She had also explained to me how she had worked within a wide spectrum of specialties over the course of her career, as I could see myself doing as I am always eager to experience as much in my life as possible with the hunger for new knowledge and acquaintances as I proceed. I knew this was the path for me so I went to college and took up premed studies so I could follow this route.
During college, I worked multiple jobs in various fields as well as acquired a certification as an EMT. I volunteered at the local rescue squad where I received an experience like no other yet in my life. I was personally responsible for the well being of another person. Hearing all the patients' stories and seeing different scopes of injuries strengthened my technical and personable skills. Meeting large quantities of people taught me how to connect with them on a personal basis and how to modify myself with each individual to meet their needs, a necessity of mine when I am working with patients.
I am now currently shadowing a physician assistant who works at an orthopedics office in my area. Seeing the joy he brings to almost all of his patients is why I know this field is the right one for me; I want to be that person.
As a PA, I intend on working in both metropolitan and suburban areas over the scope of my career. I feel to get the most out of my profession I will need to work in an urban area in order to see vast amounts of patients with different anomalies. When I feel the experience in my career is well off, I intended to work in medically underserved areas and help all who is in need as this is a major problem within our society and the world and I will do all in my part to try and overcome that obstacle.
