Undergraduate / Global warming. Stanford essay. Solution? 'Working together as a society' [4]

Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
any comments?? this is for stanford

Have you ever thought about global warming and its effects that it might have on earth? What have you done to reduce greenhouse gases? Global warming has been becoming a big problem throughout the years. People don't acknowledge that global warming is becoming worse every day. We may drive our car to a store four blocks away or go to another city, but the distance that we drive no matter how far it is, affects global warming in a small way. Most national governments have been working on ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but what have regular civilians done? We may have some opportunities to help reduce gas emissions such as using hybrid cars, but what about the cost? Not many families can afford a hybrid car and therefore cannot do their part in helping lessen global warming. Global warming can affect the earth in many ways. It can affect habitats, ecosystems, and even people. The only solution to solving global warming is by working together as a society and doing everything that is possible to reduce greenhouse gases.

Technology has gone a long way and as a strong society that we are now, we are capable of stopping global warming. Cars are responsible for almost a quarter of annual US emissions of carbon dioxide which is the primary global warming gas. In recent years new cars have been developed such as hybrid and those that use biofuels. Some people are happy that new efficient cars are being developed but the question is, are they taking advantage of the new cars? People might think about buying a hybrid car because gas prices have being going up lately, but they never think about global warming. Most people today drive regular gasoline cars and most cannot afford new efficient cars. In order for everyone to contribute on reducing the effects of global warming, hybrid cars or environmentally friendly cars would need to be distributed among most of the public. Some might ask about the money needed to do something like that. In this situation, money is the least of our worries. People would be more concerned about global warming. There are numerous ways we can reduce greenhouse gases, we just need to make it available to everyone.

Global warming has not been a big concern to some people because they might think that rising temperatures above average is something that happens naturally. What they do not realize is that if temperatures continue to rise over a long period of time, the earth may experience some problems that would be impossible to solve. Although severe climate changes occur through a long period of time, we still need to take action to better the future. If we do not do something today, future generations are going to have to deal with greater effects of global warming.

Global warming concerns me because it is getting worse every year and nothing is being done about it. Today hybrid cars are in demand and the government has spent some of our tax money on car industries such as GM and Chrysler to prevent them from collapsing. The tax money that was used could have been used more efficiently by making hybrid cars affordable to everyone and to develop full-size projects that would aim on reducing greenhouse gases.

There are several ways to reduce the effects of global warming, from using hybrid cars to using less electricity; we only need to make it available to everyone. National governments can only do so much to help reduce greenhouse gasses. It is up to everyone to do their part. Although some people have been doing their part in an effort to reduce greenhouse gases, most have not been changing when faced with the hard evidence of global warming; they are only going to change when they are in the midst of the crisis.

Undergraduate / "born in Salinas, California" - application essay [2]

Describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school- and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

I was born in Salinas, California and I am an only child. It was not easy growing up because most of the time I was by myself and had very few friends. I grew up as a very quiet and timid person. It has hard growing up because I did not have close friends in which I could talk to. My first year in high school was a very hard year for me. I did not have many friends and I was mostly by myself. As time went by, I started making new friends but I was still the same quiet and timid person. This past summer, I worked at a theme park. The experience that I had changed me in a way. I made a lot of new friends and I was not that same quiet and timid person that I was before. I had more self confidence and did not feel alone anymore.

My family has been a big part of my life. My dad has been a big influence on me. He has taught me that everything is possible and that I can accomplish all my goals. Growing up was not easy for me. When I first went to school, I had a lot of trouble because I did not speak English. I did not have friends to help me with my homework and I spent about two hours with my dad just to do one worksheet. He himself did not speak English and really had a hard time. Although it was hard for him, he never gave up and helped me throughout my first two years of school. My mom has also been a big influence on me. She has helped me so much throughout my life, from reminding me to do my homework to making sure I have everything I need. Both of my parents were born and raised in Mexico. When they first arrived in the United States, they had a hard time finding a job and a good place to stay. Despite their difficulties, they managed to take care of me . They have gave me everything that I have ever wanted and have greatly inspired my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer and working for NASA or Boeing. My dad has taken me to NASA tours in where I have had the chance of managing air traffic in a fictional airport display. They have always helped me with everything and have always told me that if I do my best in everything, I can accomplish all my dreams and goals.

Undergraduate / 'volunteering at local schools' - UC prompt#2 - Helping people [2]

Can someone read it? I need to know if it sounds good..

Helping people has been one of my strongest qualities. Throughout the four years of high school, I have contributed to helping people. It all started with just community service and little by little it became part of my personality. Helping people is very important to me because I feel as if I am making a difference in someone's life. I see helping people as a way to make new friends and a way to show people the type of person that you truly are.

Throughout high school, I have contributed to helping people and have volunteered to help out at local schools. During the last two summers, I spent time going to summer school to help students learn English as a second language. I was informed about a program at summer school that regarded Hispanic students learning English as a second language. I wanted to help students learn English because I myself had a hard time learning it. This contribution that I did is very important to me because it truly shows the type of person that I am. Many students that I helped did not speak a lot of English and mostly spoke Spanish. Most of the students had just recently arrived from another country and were new to the United States. Although it was kind of difficult to teach them English, I had a lot fun a and made a lot of new friends. Throughout my Sophomore and Junior year, I also helped Spanish-speaking parents in school meetings by translating what teachers say to Spanish. Many parents commented on how helpful I was to them. I learned so much from helping at summer school and it made me realize that helping people is something that I like to do.

The contributions that I have done throughout high school make me proud because I know that I have done something that not many people do. It also makes me proud because some of the students that I helped told me that they enjoyed being with me. I also received many comments from teachers about being helpful. It made me feel pleased about myself because not many students contribute their time to helping others. I'm also proud because this showed many people the type of person that I truly am. My experiences with helping people has greatly increased my self-confidence and has made

me a much better person.

This relates to the person that I am because I like to help people. I enjoy helping people especially when I know that not a lot people do what I do. Most of my community service hours that I have done throughout high school are related to helping others. During Freshman and Sophomore year, I volunteered at a local school to help 1st grade students with their class work and homework. It was really fun because I spent a lot of time with kids. I have learned so much from my experiences and plan to do the same things in the future .

One of my best personal qualities that I have developed throughout high school is helping others and having the capability to work well with people. I personally think that helping others is a great way of meeting new people and making new friends. Not only do you make new friends, but you also show other people the type of person that you are.
