Undergraduate / 'my analytical and quantitative skills' - UPenn Transfer [6]

As I continue to read other people's essays to schools, I have seen that the responses are less direct and a lot more abstract, giving out of the box examples of things. Do you think my essay is too strait forward and doesn't represent me as being a well rounded person

Undergraduate / 'Collaborate' + 'Finance' + '50 cent' + 'Developing India' - NYU Supplements [2]

Why NYU?

I feel New York University is all about opportunity. It offers not only a world-class education, but also the opportunity to explore, engage, network, collaborate, and become immersed in the dynamics and diversity of the institution and community. It is that feeling you get when on campus that you are able to be educated and live in such a global powerhouse city, yet at the same time feel the college atmosphere. There is a great juxtaposition of business and culture that is unique to NYU, and is something that is immensely valuable when wanting to pursue a career in the finance industry. The University offers the opportunity to network and collaborate with some of the largest businesses and corporations in the industry, all at the same time of engrossing in the wide diversity of the campus, students, faculty, and community. NYU is a global campus, with opportunities to study abroad, as well as experience the diversity of people from assorted backgrounds, looking to go various directions in life. These unique dynamics along with the strong liberal arts core that NYU offers, helps enhance my intellect, expertise, and skills to cultivate me in to a confident, well-rounded individual required to transcend the worldwide business environment. NYU will enable me to become fully immersed in my education and community, because of the opportunities the school provides and the confidence I will take with me for the future.

Regardless of whether or not you have an intended major or concentration, please elaborate on an academic area of interest and how you wish to explore it at NYU's campuses in New York or Abu Dhabi or at one of our global academic centers around the world. Please share any activities or experiences you have had that have cultivated your intellectual interests leading you to choose to study at the NYU campus of your choice.

Finance allows me to harness my quantitative skills and passion for economics to incorporate them to real life applications. It is intriguing to look at the allocation of resources to optimize the efficiency and performance of different economic entities. What are more important to me are the quantifiable values behind this distribution. Stern School of Business allows me to explore finance because of its location in a global epicenter, as well as the positions it holds around the world with its global alumni base and academic centers. Through the diversity and dynamics at NYU and the strong liberal arts core, I will become a well-rounded individual that will have a vast array of skills. From my experience in my economics course at Syracuse, my professor has showed me how not just conceptual economics, but knowledge in finance gives a person the ability to create value. Finance would ultimately allow me to not only give opportunity, assistance, and structure to businesses, but use these tools to increase values, advantages, and standards for everyday people. After discerning this academic and intellectual interest, I began to look for schools to give me the best opportunities to meet my goals. The academic excellence at NYU combined with the professors, dynamics, diversity, and location of the school will create an experience that would push my boundaries of intellectual knowledge and create opportunities for me that no other university in the world could.

What intrigues you? Tell us about one work of art, scientific achievement, piece of literature, method of communication, or place in the world (a film, book, performance, website, event, location, etc.), and explain its significance to you.

The rapper 50 cent was on the set of his movie and at the same time, was recording the soundtrack. As a reporter boldly asked the rapper when he gets sleep, 50 retorted promptly "Sleep, sleep is for those people who are broke. I don't sleep, I might miss the opportunity to make a dream become a reality." It's clear this is not to be taken literal, but the message speaks volumes. What 50 Cent meant by this quote was not to never sleep, it was to say that in order to ensue and accomplish your goals in life, an individual and their capabilities will be pushed to the limits, and through these trials and tribulations often comes opportunity. People don't become successful in the world by going to work from 9-5 everyday and coming home. Starting out at a low level position comes with sacrifices, and you will never know when opportunity comes knocking, so you have to always be on the lookout. Very few get to the top of the world by sitting back and doing nothing, but when you want to succeed as bad as you want to sleep, then you'll present yourself with the opportunity to succeed. That's the challenge I'm really looking for; one that will really push the boundaries of my intellect, knowledge, and persona to drive my thirst and ability to accomplish more.

India is one of the fastest emerging nations in the world, but still has major tribulations and barriers to deal with. I stood there in my heritage country on the corner of a street in the slums of Delhi to look out in front of me, only to see people who have none of what I have, but still have smiles on their faces, and love and care in their hearts. I ask myself how can these underserved people of India be so exultant, while even the upper class of American youth finds first world problems to complain about? Young Americans create artificial and subtle complaints to hide behind the reality of the over privileged and materialistic lives we live. My experiences in India have captivated and allowed me to mature, for I know that people live far worse lives than myself. If I have learned one thing from the extreme poverty and paucity conditions in India, it is to be content and grateful with everything I have, because as I saw, even people with absolutely nothing, are happy with themselves. As I witnessed the true misery of unthinkable poverty, I have been taught that even if a person is poor in wealth, they can still be wealthy in spirit. As an American society, we need to lose the ignorance, negligence, and wood-headedness that make up our senselessness. I know that everything I have in life should be cherished, and without actually seeing the issue firsthand, I may still be a naïve and ignorant adolescent living in my own middle class American bubble.

Undergraduate / "Why did you pick the emergency room?" - Essay for Common App [4]

This is absolutely amazing description and you can easily see the passion through the writing. It does need to be cut down a lot to meet the maximum character limit. I feel like you can actually cut out everything before "Someone page Dr. Huang now." Also, if you really need to, you could cut the second to last paragraph out, starting with "So my entire summer went on..." Other than that, don't change anything. Great response and really gave great perspective and passion.

Required for all applicants: Considering both the specific undergraduate school to which you are applying and the unique aspects of the University of Pennsylvania, what do you hope to learn from and contribute to the Penn community? (Please answer in one page, approximately 500 words.)

Growing up, I never imagined settling down and doing one thing with my career. In fact, I never thought of any serious careers. One week I would play baseball on the diamond, the next I would be getting tear myself up taking my skateboard to the aspault, and after that I would hit the turf to play some football. The idea of settling on a real career only hit me during my high schools years. As I discovered a wide variety of subjects, I initially thought I would become an architect, building large mansions and giving birth to city skylines. But through a change of heart, finding myself, and developing new skills, I realized I would hone my analytical and quantitative skills with my passion for economics to delve in to finance and data.

The University of Pennsylvania provides opportunities to students around the globe. The constant quest for innovation combined with the scholastic and distinct challenges that the University presents is what makes Penn so special and what gives me a real opportunity to learn from. By receiving a Penn education, I hope to take with me creativity, community engagement, and confidence in my future career. I have come a long ways in terms of developing my skills, but still have infinite leagues to go to get to where I ultimately want to be in life. The picturesque, vibrant, and historically rich city of brotherly love is echoed in the University, it's founder, and its motto. These dynamics will allow me to immerse myself in the community's atmosphere, adding volumes to my value as a well-rounded person. The intellectual capital of world class and distinguished faculty will be able to provide me with the resources and guide to my academic, career, and life aspirations.

Wharton's diversity amongst faculty and students create a unique dynamic and global presence. With students and faculty coming in from all over the globe, I hope to gain more of an understanding of what it means to be an interconnected world and how actions in one part of a country, can effect other parts of the planet. This diversity can enhance my intellect, expertise, and skills to cultivate me in to a confident, well-rounded individual required to transcend the worldwide business environment. I expect to use the skills, knowledge, resources, and opportunities Wharton presents to not only give opportunity, assistance, and structure to businesses, but use these tools to increase values, advantages, and standards for everyday people. Wharton is able to integrate this wide array of tools and skills in to giving me the foundation to innovate and adapt to new developments. We live in a globalized world and innovation will be able to create an advantage in my future career.

My aspirations are not limited to only what I can gain from my education, but also what I can contribute to the University and the Wharton School. The excelling students around me would motivate me becoming involved, engaged, and immersed quickly on campus I hope to make positive impacts on the University, the Wharton School, and the community. With my confidence, energy, and ambition to thrive both academically and socially, I believe I can add value to the atmosphere and diversity. My leadership qualities, spirit, and vision of optimism I have for the future will be able to encourage, help, inspire, and direct others to a better future. The University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School offers not only a world-class education, but also the opportunity to explore, engage, network, collaborate, and become immersed in the dynamics and diversity of the institution and community.
