Undergraduate / 'My life in a nut shell' - UT transfer Statment and purpose essay [2]

Hey everyone I am writing this essay for the university of Texas at Austin it is a statement and purpose please tell me what you think!

My life in a nut shell

Starting at the age of 5 I knew I was destined to become a longhorn. It has been my lifelong dream to wear the burnt orange with pride. I have visited Austin and the UT campus multiple times for many different reasons and each time I have fallen more in love with the city and the campus, it is where I belong and where I want to purse my degree to make my way to a successful career just like all of the other longhorns before.

My goal is to pursue a degree of business in one of the most prestigious universities in America, the University of Texas at the McCombs school of Business. Once into the Business school I would like to earn my degree in either marketing or management and with that degree, become an insurance adjuster. Becoming an insurance adjuster and earning a steady pay will then open up a vast amount of opportunities to give back to the community via donations to charities and volunteer work.

A friend of mine once told me that "you are not truly successful in life until you give back to someone else". I am a firm believer in that statement because one's life is not defined by their individual achievements, but rather how an individual impacted the lives of others. Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to group up in a family that has tried to live their lives by this philosophy. My family and I are always looking for ways to help others and our community. For example we donate money to charities, like the make a wish foundation and other local places. Another way my family and I try to help our community is by doing volunteer work. I have accumulated just over 200 hours of community service at places like the food bank, two elementary schools (Anna May Daulton and Erma Nash), as well as I am a member of the habitat for humanity's at Texas Tech, and will be participating in their spring events.

My favorite place I have volunteered at is the food bank that is located in my downtown Mansfield. At the food bank we participate in doing multiple jobs such as, bagging food into carts, moving frozen foods, and my favorite "job" is handing the food out to the people that truly need it. Handing the food carts to all of the families that need it and seeing their smiling faces warms my heart and makes all the time we spend there that much better.

By getting a degree at the University of Texas more opportunities will become available, more than any other university in the nation. To me having a degree from Texas is more than just a sign of intelligence, it is a sign of hard work, determination, and one's will to be the best.

Undergraduate / 'put away the cell phones' - University of Texas Transfer Essay [2]

I am currently a student at Texas Tech University and am trying to transfer into the University of Texas at Austin, I have written this essay and would like any possible feedback on it, or any suggestions to add or take out. Thank you for any help provided!

Prompt: Choose an issue of importance to you-the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope-and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

It is about Texting While driving

In today's world, technology seems to run our lives. Many people have a cell phone and some even call their cell phone their life line. The cell phone is a provider of very important information such as addresses, phone numbers, and important dates. However, while the cell phone has many positive attributes like keeping people in touch, the cell phone becomes very dangerous when a person decides to drive and use it. People that are using their cell phones are easy to spot because they are the ones going too fast, too slow, or swerving from lane to lane. The use of cell phones while driving is rapidly becoming the cause of more and more accidents in our communities. To reduce the accidents that our occurring there should be certain laws put into action that prevents the use of any cellular devices while driving. When a person chooses to use their cell phone and drive, it can cause accidents, injuries, and even lead to death.

Using a cell phone causes many dangerous conditions on our roads because it distracts the drivers' attention. The younger generation thinks that texting is safer than carrying on a phone conversation. A text message is short, to the point, and over quickly. As a result, younger adults are texting more than talking. Regrettably, these same young adults are also inexperienced drivers, so using the cell phone while driving decreases their reaction time to emergency situations. No cell phone use is acceptable whether it is texting, talking, or just checking it, while an automobile is in use the cell phones should be put away.

It does not matter what age a person is, anyone is susceptible to an accident and using a cellular device while driving only raises the chances of a wreck. There should be laws put into place to prevent any use of cell phones while in control of any automobile. If we can have a law to protect our children when school lets out, why would we not protect our children that are out on the roads at any given time? People say that they would pull off to the side of the road to take a call or text their fiends back, so making a law is unnecessary. While pulling off to the side of the road is ideal, in reality, most people will not do it. A similar situation is found in seat belt usage. Most Drivers require their back seat passengers to wear a seat belt, but most do not. To protect people, the state of Texas made it mandatory for all passengers to wear seat belts. If new laws such as seat belts can be enforced, then why can't there be any laws preventing the use of cell phones. Such a law would save hundreds if not thousands of lives, and money.

If one is caught using a cell phone while driving, tickets should be written and the driver should have to do some kind of course that shows them why using their cell phone while driving is dangerous. Arguments can be made that there are actually laws already in place that define cellular use while driving, but they are not specific enough, or enforced to any degree. Most state laws state that one cannot use a cell phone while in a school zone or if under the age of eighteen. What the law fails to do is include the large number of people over the age of eighteen who are using their cell phones that could cause accident.

There may be some alternatives such as hands free headsets, or Bluetooth wireless connections through a car, which might help. In reality though, drivers only appear to see what's going on around them when talking on the phone via headset or Bluetooth. Yes, individuals may not be physically on the phone but their minds are literally on "hold" while the conversation is taking place. As a result, hands free head sets and Bluetooth connections do not help drivers enough to the road around them. So while these might be some alternatives they still do not decrease the risk enough to not place some kind of restriction on cell phones. The best solution to this problem is if drivers would simply turn off their cell phones before getting into a car and put them away out of sight.

No one can predict when an accident is going to occur, but why not lessen the risk of that happening and put away the cell phones? A person should value their life and the lives of the people around them to put away their cell phone until they are no longer operating an automobile. The generation before us was able to live without using cell phones while driving and so should we.
