Undergraduate / CORNELL CALS ESSAY ("we must take care of the world we live in") [4]

From a young age, I was taught that we must take care of the world we live in. That means switching the lights off when leaving a room, turning off the car off if it was going to be stopped for a long time, using garbage receptacles, and recycling whenever possible. Sadly it seems that not many other people here in Puerto Rico were taught the same things I was. People throw their garbage on the ground and rarely do they recycle. Land is cleared, overnight at times, to make way for new apartment complexes that remain empty. Both of my parents' families are advocates for environmentally- friendly practices, as well as being actively involved on many levels. Their influence on me has further developed my interest in caring for and protecting our environment. I am committed to helping to protect what is left of the Earth including its resources and bio-diversity. I want to be able to share my passion and knowledge with others.

I have travelled to Europe and Latin America and have seen countries with stellar policies protecting the environment, as well as countries that need help developing and enforcing policies that will defend the Earth. My travel experience has led me to pursue International Relations and find a way to integrate this field of study with the study of Natural Resources, both of which I will pursue at Cornell.

Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is the perfect school for me. It has a great reputation, is very diverse, and has an extensive alumni network, which will provide me with invaluable career opportunities. The rigorous programs will challenge and stimulate me, giving me a great deal of knowledge on the subject I am planning to study. Above all, the world class research facilities would allow me to perform research with top professors who are leaders in their respective fields. With this new understanding and this new knowledge, I can spread the message to other people worldwide so they can see the benefit and purpose of saving what's left of our planet.

any corrections?????????

Undergraduate / CMC essay ("the world's economic theory and philosophy") [3]

Identify and discuss a person, fictional or nonfictional, who has helped shape culture and thought. You may select someone from any field: literature, the arts, science, politics, history, athletics, business, education, etc.

Even though Karl Marx died before his political ideologies were put into practice, they had a profound effect on the world's economic theory and philosophy. Marx thought that capitalism was self-defeating and would only widen the gaps between social classes. In order to close the gaps in the social hierarchy, Marx proposed his own ideas. He insisted that capitalism must be replaced by a system in which work is performed for the common good. This idea is now acknowledged as a system known as communism.

Despite the fact that Marx himself never accomplished the social and economic revolution he pushed for, his philosophy was later adopted by Vladimir Lenin to replace the Russian monarchy. Mao Zedong later brought the political system to China. The system has been adopted by several countries around the world. Nowadays, many people conclude that Marxist capitalism did not work. Communism in Russia soon failed. Chinese communism has incorporated capitalist ideals. Cuban communism has created even more problems for the country's people.

Marx also proposed a new economic system in which wealth would be equally distributed. This system failed as well. Many critics argue that the reason Marx's systems failed is that his ideas conflict with human nature. The main problem is that his ideas would require humans to be unselfish and altruistic, which most of us are not. Marx proposed an impossible solution to what is a spiritual problem. I believe so too. Karl Marx had great ideas, but they were unrealistic and misused as a way to gain power over the people. Spiritual problems must be solved on the spiritual level, rather than by reforming poitical practices and governments.

DOES THIS ANSWER THE PROMPT???ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT???
