Undergraduate / Common App essay - "Theater is my passion" - extracurricular activities [3]

macauleec

Okay I revised it.

Theater always seemed intriguing to me. I started off with the mindset of not wanting to be noticed or called on, let alone have the lead role. However as time went on I started to change and I saw myself grow more than ever before.

Through acting, writing and/or directing my own plays. I have been able to exercise my talents beyond the stage. I have been able to involve and empower my friends and my community and help them see their own potential.

I am grateful for the experience because with participating in theater I have become confident, creative, passionate, and more committed to the art. I've realized that through hard work I can not only perform but also bring joy to another individual.

Hey everyone! If you can please provide feedback and criticism I would appreciate it so much!

Prompt: briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities (1000 character maximum)

There are experiences that will be engraved in my mind and my memory forever; and one I can recall vividly. I am sitting in front of the mirror of a crowded rehearsal room, sharing space with my excited fellow cast members and the voice of a fussing director. Conversation from within the audience and throughout the set is all around me but my mind and heart is moving so fast, I can hardly pay attention to either of them. For I know, in a about half an hour, all that I had to offer was going to be out there, and I was going to experience my first time being on the big stage.

Experiences like that, the thrill of theater and overcoming my big stage fright is what shaped me into the person I am today. Theater always seemed intriguing to me, however the spotlight wasn't. I started off with the mindset that although I had the talent, did not want to be noticed or called on, let alone have the lead role. However as time went on, I found myself in different roles with characters different from the next, my mindset started to change and I saw myself growing more than ever before.

With this new mindset, I have been able to exercise my talents beyond the regular stage. Through acting, writing and/or directing my own plays, I have been able to involve and empower my family, my friends and my community and help them all see their own potential. Behind the scenes is very rewarding, however one can also learn of their limits and grow as a person by being on the stage.

As a growing performer with this new mindset, I face the challenges with every new role with anticipation and a thirst. My time is dedicated to finding sheet music, learning lines and personalizing every new character. One would think that this dedication is self-serving. However seeing how theater empowered and changed me, and the feeling of knowing that I am encouraging others, that is far from the truth. I perform with the hope that someone else might change their mindset and will too reach the full potential of their talent.
