Undergraduate / Syracuse - writing supplements - Short Answers 'my mother, Millicent, is my idol' [2]

Who or what influenced you to apply to Syracuse University?
When it comes to sacrifice, my mother, Millicent, is my idol; she's a vehement and altruistic woman that puts her family and her children above all others. When it comes to ambition, my sister, Jennifer, is my idol; she's a woman flooded with perseverance and determination. They have become my nurturers, having been brought up by their side admiring their willpower, I have been influenced to follow the best of opportunities. Their charisma has inspired me to pursue my objective in attending a university that suits my personal interests and a university that excels in the academic field. Syracuse University is a superb institution that allows students to explore various terrains that will diversify my mentality, helping me in comprehending the perspectives of both my family and the world's populace.

Who is the person you dream of becoming and how do you believe Syracuse University can help you achieve this?
I don't dream of becoming anyone in particular, I only dream of becoming the best man I could be. A person that can support his mother at old age and a person who at the end of each day can say he's happy. My ambition isn't to possibly become a millionaire. I seek the opportunity to aid those that have been stripped of their voices and opinions by oppressive forces. By attending Syracuse University, my diploma and my merit will create new possibilities for me to assist those constrained in the future.

If you have had work experience, what skills and/or knowledge did you gain?
In the summer of 2013, I traveled to the Dominican Republic to take part in a religious program that educated the poor of Juan Dolio on religion. I was an English to Spanish and vice versa translator for the American and British missionaries who had organized the program. Through my four-week period of participation, I was able to complete a total of 100 hours of community service. Along with the religious teachings of the program, the missionaries and volunteers aided the people by providing them with medication, nutrition, and recreational activities. During spare time, I took care of children (ages 3 to 7), keeping them entertained by playing baseball, and attending to them while at the beaches. The Dominican Republic taught me that even when face-to-face with destitution children could still smile and their spirits could be lifted when a simple hand or word of encouragement is lent to them.

Based on your interests, tell us what real-world experiences you might pursue during your education at Syracuse as part of the University's Mission, Scholarship in Action?

Personally, my style of learning is through experiences, not by examining the pages of a textbook and memorizing answers. True education does not derive from remembrance, but actually from absorbing and appreciating information. One could learn about Paris from the words on a sheet of paper, but until one sets foot in the city, one does not know the true splendor the City of Lights offers.

I consider myself a Global citizen, not only an American citizen. As a person who has moved to different regions and a different country, I comprehend the value of incorporating new ideologies. While at Syracuse University, I intend to follow my interest in learning languages. Through the university's language program, that offers Italian, French, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Arabic and more, I wish to continue my passion for languages. A particular language says much about a society and allows a person to comprehend distinct peoples and their culture.

Studying abroad will be an experience that Syracuse University can accomplish for me. To be truly capable to grasp the history, the art, and the lessons of a new territory will be magnificent. A person's outlook on life cannot change unless they are exposed to a plethora of diversity and a new community.

Speeches / My feet started to shiver when it's my turn; What's your greatest achievement/Why? [8]

I would like to ask all of you a question: what is your greatest achievement so far? Think on it.
there's one valuable thing I have achieved recently that I'll treasure it till the end of my life.
It was place last week, the second day of the SAW. The day we did abseiling. My feet started to shiver when it's my turn. The roaring sea was clashing with the rocks at the bottom of the cliff.

I took a very deep breath... gripped the rope tightly... and my trembling feet started to move... slowly horrifyingly descending along the line. My feet got tougher and tougher each step they took with the encouraging cheers from my teammates. My mind was sturdy. I would not disappoint them or myself.

At last, I managed to complete this daunting and what seemed to be an intimidating task. Then I touched the ground. What a relief!
Someone once said, "A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it." The reason why I take this as my greatest achievement is because the courage and confidence I gained turned me into a person who is willing to challenge herself to be more adventurous. Life is full of challenges! Fear not. Stretch your limits. You will never know how far you can go.

Poetry / Cosmonaut - Poem about personification/metaphor [3]

Llamapoop123

So basically if I were you I would just change a couple of words. The "her dress" part is a bit awkward and does flow nicely. I love the imagery of the poem, it sounds marvelous. Then, what I would suggest is break up some of your lines. Sometimes they're just a bit too long, if they would be broken up the feeling of the poem would cause more of an impact on the reader.

She is a skipping stone, her dress - blossoming.
An ephemeral force whisks her away, stardust dancing along her rim.
On her first bounce, she slams into puddles, her ripples crashing out into the furthest of planets.
Her second bounce grazes the moon, she waltzes along the shimming void.
She glides across bottomless cosmos.
On her third bounce, she slows, her light fading...
And on the fourth bounce she rests,
Eternally as the night sky.

Undergraduate / Maverick / Swimming / Vendetta / family / Global citizen - George Washington - supplement [3]

Two words that describe me are:
Untamed Maverick

A leisure activity I enjoy is:
Swimming in the ocean is the most unwinding activity for me. Being able to dive into the water and allow waves to slowly drift you away is wonderful. As a person who is persistent, I see the sea as an obstacle that must be overcome to reach your goal, but the phenomenal sensation of a beach represents that people should try to enjoy the journey to their goal.

My favorite movie is:
V for Vendetta, is my favorite movie because it was the first movie I ever watched in English and the first movie I watched in the United States after having moved to the country. Also, the film portrays a character that fights for his beliefs and for the voices of others, which is significantly meaningful to me.

My role model is:
My role models are the women in my life: my sister (because of her personal determination and ambition), my grandmothers (because of their affection, strong temperament and self-assertion), and my mother (because of her ability to sacrifice herself for her family).

Please tell us what excites you about being a member of the GW community. (500 word limit)
The George Washington University, as a well-established university has caught my attention with its wide array of opportunities. The university offers courses, majors and minors that a vast majority of other American colleges or universities do not offer. The George Washington University is a true blend of liberal arts making it my top choice with its academic diversity suiting my interests as a future college student.

As a small college with an ambiance of intimate learning in every classroom, The George Washington University would expand my capacity to fathom new subjects, along with permitting me the capability to pursue new interests. With over 50% of classes having less than 20 students, more than ample communication with professors can be established, which greatly appeals to me.

Personally, my style of learning is through experiences, not by examining the pages of a textbook and memorizing answers. True education does not derive from remembrance, but actually from absorbing and appreciating information. At The George Washington University, I hope to become an active member in the diverse associations of American society, while in our nation's capital.

With a reputation for a famed International Studies Program, and as a person who intends to pursue a career in this field, The George Washington University is very alluring. I believe that one of the main components for acquiring effective international perspectives is through the learning of languages. A particular language says much about a society and allows a person to comprehend distinct peoples and their culture. Through my research, I've learned that The George Washington University offers various programs of study for those interested in linguistics. The multitude of languages ranges from Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Arabic, those not even being all of them, is immensely enticing and noteworthy.

I consider myself a Global citizen, not only an American citizen. As a person who has moved to different regions and a different country, I comprehend the value of incorporating new ideologies. While at The George Washington University, I intend to pursue my interest in learning languages and absorb new points of view by mingling with distinct people.

My family believes that a person is worth the amount of languages that they speak; and I hope to continue my studies in language. If I were to be accepted to The George Washington University, at the time of my graduation, not only would I have a diploma from a remarkable institution, but I would also exit my college years with a skill to speak several different languages, which would allow countless doors to be opened and provide me with countless business opportunities.
