Pick your favorite artist or designer. Write about a day that you would spend with her/him, what questions would you ask and/or what would you hope to learn from her/him?

My first experience of an Ulf Moritz fabric was at an early age. As my mother explained the unusual texture, I was struck by the 3D effect and unusual texture. My most recent exposure was at the Paris SAHCO showroom. I am struck how each collection is different and unusual. One collection could be sober with minimalistic designs and tone on tone colors and the next flamboyant, avant-garde and revolutionary.

Spending a day with Ulf I saw the broad spectrum of his range. We visited a sample loom where he had woven silk and metal threads into gossamer to create an ethereal looking fabric. He showed how he worked with diverse yarns to make fabrics out of pineapple fiber, horsehair and bamboo. I saw that Ulf was a perfectionist which was evident from the attention he paid to every detail and carefully listened to technical changes suggested by his team. When I asked him what made him choose such diverse yarns, he explained that "one is as famous as their last collection". He made me feel different yarns and explained visualization did not necessarily translate into a marketable fabric if it did not meet the technical specifications. We then saw how a fabric was washed with a chemical to make it fire retardant. I asked him whether any fabric is naturally fire retardant. He demonstrated with a piece of silk to show this was naturally fire retardant. When I asked him where he drew his inspiration from he told me that observation leads to inspiration; in a perfectly coiled baby fern as well as in haute couture. Colors for clothing and for furnishing often draw inspiration from each other. I asked him if he restricted himself to one theme or technique for a collection he told me that he uses both traditional methods and latest techniques to achieve designs that range from the opulent to the outlandish. What is the time period for a collection from visualization to production of an entire collection? Every collection has a part that is more a work of art and not for practical, everyday use and these have brought him many Design awards. Does he include these in his collections as a "crowd- puller" and how does he balance these fabrics with his more practical fabrics that can be washed or dry-cleaned? He showed me his latest work in progress. His theme was a royal, extravagant look. For curtains/decorative fabrics, he had silks in various shades of purple and gold, some plain, some embroidered and printed. With this he had combined thicker fabrics for upholstery with deeper shades in jacquards and plains. Together we went through different textures of velvet and linen which would complete the collection as each collection needed basic fabrics with a reasonable price point. No collection is complete without nondescript colors like beige and off-white. Thus I learnt how a collection should be compiled with rich, exotic fabrics as well as plain fabrics.

Shadowing Ulf Moritz and simply observing him; I learnt that I need to be more versatile in my designs, develop my taste and style and learn to think "out of the box", create fabric compositions that are not only stylish but also are functional on a deeper level by using natural materials thus reducing environmental waste. My experience is limited to my culture and with him I was exposed to a different culture and concepts.

He inspired me to go back to school and create a fabric design using nails which I rusted with vinegar and imprinted on a fabric which I first dyed yellow with turmeric, a natural dye

Undergraduate / One particular incident changed me from being self-centered to being sensitive to others. [10]

Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

November 26, 2008, was the stage of one of the most violent terrorist attacks in Mumbai. In India, we remember this infamous day as 26/11, the dates taken to connote the kind of fear and emotions that the events of 9/11 set upon the world.

The Taj, a luxury hotel, was one of several sites attacked by a group of 10 terrorists over the course of three days in Mumbai. My parents were to dine at the Taj but at the last minute changed to another venue. Their restaurant was five minutes away but that the time of the attack they stranded in the dark at the restaurant till early morning, their guest who was staying at the Taj could not go back for clothes or passport and stayed with us until he could arrange a temporary passport to return to Germany. The city was paralyzed and the only news was through bloody images on television and messages from cellphones of those trapped.

Until then, I had lived in a safe environment, unfamiliar with suffering. I lost two of my friends; others lost both parents in the attacks. This opened my eyes to seeing that nothing is ever constant. It made me decide to be more caring and sensitive in my relationships, and appreciate the time I have with a person. I paid more attention to the elderly in my family as they deserved more attention and love, for as children we perceive that they will be with us forever, staying the way they are at the current moment.

The hotel staff was the true heroes of the day. They put their own lives on the line, risking their own lives to hide and feed the guests, who were complete strangers to them. They made me realize the importance of thanking and appreciating those who serve me. The General Manager lost his entire family but put aside his grief and did not leave the hotel until the last guest had been escorted to safety. This incident propelled me to volunteer at my church in a program where underprivileged children are helped with studies and counseled in dealing with abuse. Interacting with these children, I understood why boys who were barely out of their teens would mercilessly seek and kill everyone knowing that they too would be killed. They often came from broken homes or had to deal with fathers who drank and then abused the women and children. The mothers worked through the day to provide for the family and the children were left to their own devices. They were then vulnerable and could be easily brainwashed. By helping them educate themselves, we equip them to differentiate right from wrong and inculcate them with right values. It was my way of trying to cope with the attacks and help prevent any more children fall prey to wrong indoctrination.

As I started becoming more sensitive to the poor, I took part in a School program called Niswarth,
where we went into the famous slums of Dharavi, Mumbai. We saw how children younger than me
went to school and then did the work of an adult to sustain a drunk father and siblings. In the midst
of it all they had a "joie de vivre" which we having everything yet find something to complain about.

Time dims memory but those who experience loss and tragedy are scarred forever. Many have forgotten 26/11, but the scars still remain with us. I was blessed that my parents were not in the hotel and I did not suffer the trauma of losing them.

In the words of Mercedes Lackey in "Fortune's Fool - "We're given a choice in our lives, to make things better, or worse, or merely endure like sheep. I choose to make things better, as much as I can."

Essays / Topic explanation help - Schools don't teach the required skills? [4]

I think that this prompt is suggesting that you give reasons why school should inculcate skill based subjects that will help children to face problems of the adult world and will help them to carve out careers for themselves without necessarily having to go to college. The suggestion is that Schools include outdated subjects like languages such as Sanskrit or Latin which will not help a person in his/her career. Specialization such as these are suitable for further studies if the child wants to become a scholar of ancient languages. By the 8th standard schools should allow children to pick particular subjects pertaining to their interests that will equip them for life in the real world and out of the protected school environment. Upto this age it is good to give a general education where one learns the basis of each subject to help one to decide their interest. Hope this helps!
