Undergraduate / "About being American" - UC Essay Prompt #1. [9]

Since my arrival into the United State s, I could not help but think of myself as an alien. I was from a foreign country and everything about me seemed different than everyone else. From my skin color to my black hair, I felt like a puzzle piece that had no place to fit. Maybe it was just me who thought this but ever since I moved from Korea to the United States, I had a hard time assimilating into American culture.

I often pondered and questioned why my parents would want to come to a place where they became a minority. It was hard for them to communicate with people for they spoke little English and it seemed as if life only got harder for them. Even through these obstacles, I grew up seeing our family move into a nice home, purchasing nice cars, and living a good life. I came to realize that America provided opportunity to anyone who was willing to work hard, which was why my parents decided to come here.

For myself, who once lacked ethnic identity, I realized that being American was not being white or being native to the land. No matter what ethnic background we are from, we all once had to start somewhere and make our way up. The entire process of trying to assimilate into the mainstream of American social and economic culture is what makes anyone an American. From working hard, to raising a family, and buying a house, this is the goal of all people who come to this country. America would not be America if it did not provide such opportunities for anyone to come and live a good life. My parents sacrificed living in their home country with their friends and family to open up new doors for me and create opportunities that I would not have otherwise. When my eyes opened to this fact, I became motivated and it became my goal to use those opportunities to make the most of myself.

VERY WELL DONE!

Undergraduate / "Good morning, visitors!" [10]

Talk a little more about the SCSP orginization and what it is that makes you so eager to educate other people about God and his word. Make it more personal by briefly talking about your beliefs.

Undergraduate / "what do you want to be when you grow up?" - UM-Flint Essay [18]

In this essay, you refer alot to yourself and high school accomplishments, instead try to talk about what about pharmacy interests you. Elaborate more on that because keep in mind that colleges will already be aware of all your accomplishments from your application.

Undergraduate / "the California State Summer School for the Arts" - TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK [3]

Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

At CSSSA, I was able to share my fervor for music with people who were
equally enthused about it. Walking down the halls of this institute, I could hear the
voluminous sounds of passionate students coming from every room. One teacher in particular left an everlasting impression on me. Edward Caroll, a gifted trumpeter and composer, helped me to realize the true talent that I possess as a musician. He not only peaked my interest for music, but inspired me to pursue any other aspirations I sought to fulfill. On several occasions I had the opportunity to converse with him and learned not only about his life experiences but also uncovered much about myself in the process.

Edward often described music as the "universal language" and explained to me that "the world we live in today is rapidly changing and we need music now more than ever as a form of communication and stability amongst one another." His words still remain notable to me and serve as the foundation keeping my curiosity for art growing. Through my own observations, I found that the external world can also be a multitude of distractions, constantly captivating people with earlier happenings or personal problems. But music can also be equally entrancing, connecting only the performer and their audience. I believe it is in art that every nation, culture and race can relate to and hopefully find enjoyable.

As expected, my family has a different perspective of what my future plans
should include. As a parent wanting her child to have stable prospects, my mom feels I
would benefit more from an established career choice. Edward explained to me his
opinion on my situation and stated: "There is no set path towards a career; there is only
the one you create for yourself, and its in becoming an interesting person that will result
in one having a successful future." I took these words into strong consideration and have
concluded that it is possible to pursue not only art but also keep education in my life as well. A happy life can only be found through self-satisfaction and the knowledge of a challenge that lies ahead.

My first day back from CSSSA, I sat with my mother watching an episode of Bathroom Divas, a hit show on the Ovation channel that gives a group of aspiring opera singers a chance at fame and fulfillment of their vocal aspirations. While I listened and watched the dedication and love each contestant displayed towards this art, I began to experience an unknown emotion I had not before. I unexpectedly began to cry. I felt strangely overwhelmed by the same emotion I experience when I am performing on stage because their dream to move people with their music was also mine.

The guidance and inspiration that I received from Mr. Caroll has greatly
influenced my life and has brought out my love for music. He has guided me to think
that it is possible to do many things as long as I do them well. I will surely continue through life with music by my side. I love every aspect of it, from the sounds that can be produced to the discipline required to master it. I aspire to be an accomplished classical vocalist and thanks to Edward Caroll, this is something I am sure to mention the next time I am approached with the question: "What do you want to be when your older?"
