Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
I am applying for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for the Master's program in Sustainable Design, Construction, and Management of the Built Environment, starting in September 2025. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, Bangladesh, in January 2021, where the program was taught in English, and I achieved an IELTS band score of 6.5. During my studies, I developed an interest in sustainable construction, reflected in my thesis on "Development of Cementitious Bricks by Incorporating Plastic Waste and Sand." This research, exploring innovative ways to use waste materials in construction, deepened my understanding of sustainability, which has continued to grow throughout my professional career.
After completing my degree, I worked as a Project Engineer at Homes71 Limited, a leading construction and real estate firm in Bangladesh, from June 2021 to July 2024. In this role, I managed multiple projects, implemented safety measures, prepared schedules and cost estimates, and ensured compliance with regulatory standards. However, I faced several challenges, such as addressing poor soil conditions, mitigating delays caused by supply chain disruptions and labor shortages, and balancing client expectations with environmental and safety regulations. Incorporating sustainable materials and ensuring thermal and acoustic comfort in designs were particularly difficult due to budget constraints and limited local expertise.
This Master's program will enhance my ability to create eco-friendly designs and adopt innovative materials to meet sustainability goals. Its focus on advanced project management and modern construction techniques will help me address challenges like supply chain disruptions and resource constraints. Additionally, the emphasis on safety, thermal comfort, and sustainable practices will enable me to design efficient, safe, and comfortable living spaces. This program will equip me with the expertise to overcome past challenges and drive sustainable infrastructure development in the future.
Europe is the best place for me to pursue my Master's degree because it offers a unique combination of excellent education and a vibrant cultural environment. Europe is a global leader in sustainability and innovation in the built environment, with universities providing practical and interdisciplinary learning. By studying here, I can gain advanced knowledge of sustainable techniques and policies that I can apply in Bangladesh. At the same time, Europe's dynamic and diverse atmosphere will allow me to engage with peers from different backgrounds, take part in cultural festivals, and grow both professionally and personally.
The infrastructure and construction sectors in Bangladesh are thriving, led by companies like Bashundhara Group, Navana Real Estate, and BTI. A Master's in Sustainable Design, Construction, and Management of the Built Environment will equip me with advanced European practices and a global perspective, helping me address challenges like urbanization and climate change through sustainable construction. Combining international expertise with local knowledge, I aim to promote efficient, sustainable designs and lead initiatives aligned with global standards. My strong family ties and commitment to giving back to society motivate me to return and contribute to Bangladesh's sustainable development while reuniting with my loved ones.
I understand that this scholarship is very competitive, but I believe my academic background, work experience, and passion for sustainability make me a strong candidate. If selected, I will work hard to meet the program's high standards and proudly represent the Erasmus Mundus community.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the program and develop my skills for a sustainable future.
Sincerely,
Mubarok Hossain Zakir
