My qualifications as a leader
I see this leadership and influencing skills as a means of motivating people around oneself to act towards achieving a common goal, making their vision a reality while putting people first and the need to connect with people to be successful.
Throughout my career I have shown my leadership and influencing skills right from my undergraduate and my current jobs. There are two evidence to justify my claim. First, in my first year at the university, i was elected as the class representative, where I ensure that student view on academic matters are heard. I work to see that the university and the department continually listen to and engage with students to improve teaching, learning, assessment and academics services.
I aimed to achieve this before the end of the first semester. As the class rep, I formed a committee within my class, where each member of the class is to contribute money to buy a photocopy machine and a projector for the class. I liaised with my HOD while we need these equipment and she gave us some money. Also, I designed an attendance sheet where every student present at each class will sign and I ensure that there is no proxy for others. I organized tutorial class for my level by inviting some seniors' students and lecturers to come and do a revision class for us. I make sure there is always meal for any senior student or lecturers who came to give us a tutorial class.
Under my leadership we successfully bought a photocopy machine and a projector before the 5th week of first semester. This greatly reduce complains of student on photocopying of handouts and inability to understand what the lecturer is explaining. Because of the attendance sheet of which each student must sign this greatly increase the attendance of student in class 92%. All these make the academics performance of student in my class at that level improved 80% compared to previous ones which I was commended for it.
Second, in my current job, I'm appointed as the head of lab technicians. The duties of this position is to ensure that laboratory operate smoothly, reordering supplies, experimental protocols and work instructions. Previous result shows that the performance of student in practical exam is very low due to insufficient lab materials and equipment and the student not having experience of the practical before the practical exam.
I formed a team to assist with the task of equipping the lab. I wrote to the registrar and within two weeks the lab was equipped. I developed a timetable for the practical class. The team I formed become more advanced and the student too started enjoying every bit of the practical class.
Because of constant practical class, the student become good in handling laboratory equipment themselves. Under my leadership as the head of lab, the lab was fully equipped and performance of student in practical exam improved greatly over the previous ones.
