Starting from a young age, I always wanted to help people out with anything they needed. From my mom asking me to bring a loaf of bread to her all the way to helping my friend in preschool get advice in telling the boy she liked that he was cute. I have always been willing to help anyone as much as I could.
In middle school, I had to learn how to communicate with my dad but with my friends in different ways. I ended up becoming the parent to my dad. I had to explain what he could and couldn't do, and had to help him with things you would not imagine. I became mature within an instant. I knew how to behave and started to take everything seriously while also having a positive attitude.
While in high school, I started to babysit children within my community. I also worked and learned useful information about children. I started to I work during summers as a C.I.T (Counselor in Training) at The Boys & Girls Club, and got good and bad experiences with children. I was able to get a child from an unhappy mood to a happy mood, was able to control a group of 20 third and fourth graders combined by myself and could create some fun lesson plans. During my sophomore school year, I started to take a Child Development class. Before my senior year started, I worked Kid's Villa (Daycare). I worked with 2 year olds to the oldest which were third graders. I was able to work with all the children with no problem, even the ones that never wanted to listen. Now that I'm a senior and in Child Development 3, I become the student that everyone came to advice for. Sometimes just questions about why is he acting like that or how do you calm this child down. I'm able to answer most questions within a second.
As I began to work with children and people of all ages, I have developed a deep passion for helping people out. Due to being able to communicate with just infants all the way to elderly, I want to help these people out by helping solve their problems. I believe Psychiatry is the solution for me. I want a career in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I want children to know that I'm there to help them with what they need and to be the person there not scared to talk to.
I can bring my knowledge of children to the University of Michigan to help me be the best I can be as an undergraduate studying psychology and a graduate studying psychiatry.
