Topic:There may be personal information that you want considered as part of your admissions application. Write an essay describing that information. You might include exceptional hardships, challenges, or opportunities that have shaped or impacted your abilities or academic credentials, personal responsibilities, exceptional achievements or talents, educational goals, or ways in which you might contribute to an institution committed to creating a diverse learning environment.

In my life as a student I have been aware and reactive of the obstacles and
challenges that have enveloped around me. My setbacks consisted of both
educational and physical obstacles that I have worked and continue to work to
break through. I have dedicated myself to the cause of preventing these
unnecessary and troubling challenges from rising up. With these challenges in
mind, I strive for a better education and understanding of reality.
My biggest setback occurred in the ninth grade, when I first began high school.
As a new freshman, I suffered under the mistaken impression that high school
was going to be like a glorified middle school. I did not expect that I would
have to spend long hours studying and thought high grades on tests were easy to
come by and that one had a lot of "free" time. Unfortunately, that was not the
case. I ended the first semester with a 75 in geometry and B's in most of my
other pre-Advanced Placement classes. Realizing that these grades might
determine if I got in to the college of my choice, I decided I needed to
knuckle down. I began to take detailed notes, spent more time on my homework
and pushed myself to study for upcoming tests. I learned how to manage my time
better so that I could be in band or football and still succeed academically.
Today, my cumulative GPA is 98.357 out of 100 and believe the changes that I
made in the way I approached my academics resulted in more academic success as
well as a less stressful high school experience. This transition brought me a
new view of reality that has helped determine my future, and my expectations.
I fully expect that the transition to the University of Texas will be similar
to my transition from middle school to high school. The difference is, this
time I am prepared. I expect college will be more academically demanding than
high school. However, I am determined not to get behind as I did my first
semester in high school. I am also confident that, should the unthinkable
happen, I can again recover by applying what I learned from my high school
experience.
My other setback that I have was the fact that I played football, yet was a
tall skinny kid. I had always loved the sport and became influenced by the want
to join up. I actually was able to play some games even though I lacked in the
size department. My life in football gave me not only a sense of a team, but
also influenced my work ethic I have today. I have come to realize that
although I may have been challenged with a skinny body, the work I put into the
game allowed for me to get some enjoyment out of it and set new standards for
the people around me.
The experiences that both the first year of high school and football gave me
was strenuous but, played an important role in the position I am today. As both
a student and an athlete I feel more prepared for the challenges that not just
college will throw at me, but that life itself will hit me with. I don't expect
anything to come easy, I want a challenge, moreover I want to show myself that
the impact of my years has really turned me around for the better. Though I may
not want the to be knocked around with life's challenges, I sure do want to
fight against them.
