As far back I can remember being able to learn something new and create new things has always fascinated me. I personally believe that the reason we humans are so ahead of other species is our innate need to understand what is in-front of us and make something out of it. And like any human , I too have an unending curiosity for learning especially in the field of Computer Engineering. Computers have always been my favorite thing. Not just for the things I can do with it but as an object. I mean what are computers really than just billions of transistors. But that same combination of transistors has given birth to some many new breakthroughs which has made our life easier everyday as we speak.
I was introduced to computers when I received my first laptop at age 12. In 10th grade, I learnt about programming languages through QBASIC but only took it seriously in college, starting with Python and machine learning. Realizing my math skills were insufficient, I paused and later learned AR app development for a hackathon. I then shifted to web development for semester projects. One project involved creating a mobile app to watch esports with AI-generated subtitles. Considering OpenAI for this, we found it impractical due to cost and suitability, which led me to explore machine learning more deeply. I realized the importance of understanding fundamentals like linear algebra, which has been vital to my learning journey.
Thus began my journey of learning machine learning. I started with the "Machine Learning" course by Andrew Ng on Coursera, where I gained foundational knowledge in regression, classification, overfitting, regularization, gradient descent, activation functions, neural networks, and more. With this foundation, I decided to undertake an image-to-image translation project using Conditional GANs.This project allowed me to delve deeply into convolutional neural networks (CNNs), pruning, activation functions, U-Net architectures, PatchGAN, and numerous other advanced concepts. Through this hands-on experience, I developed a comprehensive understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of machine learning and GANs.
The X() exchange program offers me a unique opportunity to further progress my academic and professional goals in the field of Computer Engineering. What really excites me about being part of X is its reputation in cutting-edge research and supporting faculty. The focus and encouragement on research at the undergraduate level is what really stood out for me. The fact that there are more than 100 research labs and research centers at X speaks to the research culture at X where I will get to engage in actual research projects rather than just namesake. I believe that learning from the esteemed faculty of the CSE department will greatly enhance my academic strengths and research capabilities. Additionally , Xs proximity to Y , a major IT and industrial hub, will provide me opportunities for industry collaboration and practical exposures.
I am particularly interested in courses such as Foundation of Machine Learning, Linear Optimization and Computer and network security which aligns perfectly with my aspirations to dive deeper into the field of Machine Learning in Networking. I also particularly like the option to choose courses in Liberal Arts.
Although the program will be a great challenge, especially the shift in learning environment from Nepal to X, I feel my academic backgrounds have prepared me to face this head on. I have consistently maintained strong academic performance, as evidenced by my CGPA of 3.977 out of 4. I am also currently part of an AI fellowship program by FuseMachine where I am learning the basics of Machine Learning in detail. As mentioned earlier, during my project on CGAN I have learnt a great deal about CNNs. In addition to these, I have demonstrated strong leadership skills through my role as a Javascript Community Coordinator logistic leads at a hackathon. Participating in hackathons has further strengthened my ability to adapt to new environments and work under pressure. Moreover I have developed my communication skills through conducting workshops.
With the opportunity to be a part of X, over the next one year of my study, my main objective is to expand my knowledge of Machine Learning and Networking. I want to start my journey of research in the domain of networking in Machine learning. My interest lies in using machine learning to optimize network performance, enhance security protocols, and improve resource allocation efficiency.
In conclusion, my unending curiosity to learn and create new things has driven me to pursue this opportunity of exchange program at X. I'm really excited about X strong focus on research and its supportive faculty. I believe that the courses offered in X aligns perfectly with my goal of using machine learning to enhance network performance , security and resource efficiency. With a solid academic background , I feel well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities at X.
