Nurse Practitioner Application Essay
Nursing is not only a deep-rooted passion for me; it is my way of life. I remember the moment I realized I wanted to be a critical care nurse: my first experience transporting a patient to the SICU as a third semester nursing student. The patient started to projectile vomit large amounts of frank red blood seconds before we reached the patient's room. Immediately, a herd of ICU nurses ran in, each confidently performing a different task to help save him as I stood back in admiration of every single one, realizing I wanted to be in the action. I didn't start my career as a critical care nurse; I was made into one through countless hours of knowledge and experience.
Having practiced for a year as a Registered Nurse at Sinai Hospital's ICU, I face the incredible challenges of bringing people on the brink of death back to life every day. On this unit, I take care of patients with a wide range of life threatening illnesses, from medical, surgical, and cardiac patients to neuro and shock trauma patients. I collaborate with surgical nurse practitioners and physicians on a daily basis to ensure patients receive the best health care we can give them. I feel this experience has prepared me to progress on to an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
I love being a nurse, but I have an insatiable desire for more education. I have a yearning to achieve independence in making clinical judgments based on my knowledge, experience, and critical thinking skills. After witnessing my first fascinating open-heart aortic valve replacement during my adult health rotation, my passion has been to become a cardiac surgical nurse practitioner. Earning this degree will allow me to manage all aspects of a patient's preoperative and postoperative care, to assist physician's in cardiac surgical procedures, to evaluate and monitor heart devices, to help translate evidence based care into practice, and to educate patients in health promotion and disease prevention.
Please consider me for admission to (School Name) Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP program. Thank you and have a great day!
