According to my daily experience, people with different characteristics will use different ways to discuss upsetting or controversial problems. Of course, everyone has his or her own golden rule. From my perspective, I would choose to use e-mail/test messaging to discuss upsetting or controversial problems with others for the following reasons.
On the one hand, I am so sensitive a person that I would be affected by any subtle facial expression and other nonverbal behave, which I would interpret and attach to some meaningful things. It is highly likely that any emotional feelings would mislead the talkers who are discussing upsetting or controversial problems, which may result in some worse things, such as deepening the misunderstanding or making the problems more upsetting, adding more problems and befuddlement to the problem. Nevertheless, using e-mail/test messaging will circumvent these questions well, when a people writing their opinions and arguments involved with an upsetting or controversial problem, he/she can concentrate on the problem , be sensible to the words and try their best to clear their opinions and avoid unnecessary misinterpretations.
On the another hand, using e-mail/test messaging would be more efficient, especially when it comes to some upsetting or controversial issues. Using e-mail/test messaging, we can be more sensitive to the postscript content, which would bring us less negligence and improve the efficiency of solving these upsetting or controversial problems. When people are talking, they would mostly ignore many details and only have some general ideas or opinions, which would leave much important information which may be the key to the problem-solving; while when writing, people would pay much more attention to the details, and refer to much resource to improve their ideas, rather than just speak out without much consideration. However, if you write, things would be much different, less negligence, less confusions, and more chances of solving the problems.
In the nutshell, when discussing some upsetting or controversial problems, I would use e-mail/test messaging rather than telephone/voice-messaging because of its resulting in clearer presentation and higher efficiency.
