Should acts of hate be Criminalized?
Acts of hate should not be counted as a criminal offense as long as it does not violate the laws of the land. While some may argue that all acts of hate should be criminalized, one must look at the beyond the physical action and see the internal reason for such behavior. Acts of hate should be not be criminalized for three reasons; we are entitled to our rights as American citizens, the degree of hatred acts are variable, and lastly, acts of hate can lead to positive changes.
First of all, acts of hate should not be criminalized because we are entitled to our rights as American citizens. The first Amendment states that we have the freedom of speech, religion, and press. Therefore, if one decides to say something out of hatred toward an action, while still abiding by the laws of the land, they are legally allowed to do so. Since America is a democratic nation, people are allowed to voice their opinion and vote either for or against a cause or ruling. It is our right and freedom as American citizens to show acts of hatred toward certain causes in legitimate ways, and these acts of hate should not be categorized into criminal activity.
Secondly, acts of hate, in general, should not be criminalized because the degree in which one shows their acts of hatred are variable. Not all acts of hatred are criminal activity. Of course, the greatest extent of a hatred act would be killing someone. The minimal degree of a hatred act may simply be calling them a name, or writing up an article in the local newspaper regarding your stand against something. Just because the action of one is categorized as a hatred act does not mean that they are to be criminalized. The criminalization should only take effect if the individual is violating the laws of the land, and not merely because of a general categorization.
Lastly, acts of hate should not be criminalized because they can lead to positive changes. In the case of the American Revolution, America would never even exist unless it was for the acts of hatred by the colonist toward their mother country. Protest is a form of a hated act, yet it can lead to positive changes. Currently, the gay issue is one where some people approve of it, while others detest gay lifestyles. Just because one does not agree with an issue, and decides to stand up against it is not at all a crime, unless it violates the law of the land. Positive changes may occur because of people standing up, voicing their opinion, and saying "enough is enough".
Acts of hatred should not be criminalized as long as they do not violate the laws of the land. Revolts and uprisings can actually benefit to our society as we learn to work along with each other's views and opinions. Acts of hate should not be criminalized because we are entitled to our rights as American citizens, the degree of hatred acts are variable, and lastly, acts of hate can lead to positive changes.
