Opening scenes of God Father 1 & 2 ; NCEA Level 3 English Film Study Essay

Moreover, the opening scenes of God Father 1 and 2, both have an underlying tension. This is caused by the presence of the Sicilian notion of vendetta. The cycle of revenge is once again present and stamped into the minds of the audience through the opening words, that illustrates a son seeking "revenge" for his father's murder. The rocky, barren setting of the Sicilian desert expressed through a wide shot crafts a sense of isolation and (feebleness) that the mourners are in the mercy of a greater power: either God or a Don. The mourners are seen wearing black in contrast to the light brown environment. Also, aided by diegetic music which is both depressing and solemn, the focus is brought to the religious aspect of a funeral. To the eyes of the audience, this is in contrast to the joyous wedding, in God Father 1,and is a sorrowful occasion. This, in life, is destined to befall any human being. However, the sombre mood created, is brought to an abrupt halt, with the two shots fired imposing the audience into the sudden transition of the reality of the cycle of revenge. The frantic yells and cries of the horror stuck women, for the brother who have been killed, are displayed through a low angle shot potraying the powerlessness behind the mother's tears and her inability cope with the loss of both a husband and a son. This opening scene is very significant as Coppella indecisively accumulates a succession of wideshots detailing of the environments and sources of all sounds with only an exception which makes the audience wonder "who fired the gun". Nonetheless, the heart of the scene is only evident after comprehending the contrast of Don Vito Conrleone's temperate justice promised in the first movie, which perhaps demonstrates the roots and origin of his sense of justice

Sincerely

This is very well written. You do a great job explaining the scenes to the reader. You could do a little better explaining the relevance though. The whole paragraph is explanation and very little relevance. You should add a few more sentences about how the things you describe demonstrate the movie is about revenge. For example, when you are talking about the mother and the camera angles showing her, I am not sure how it pertains to your main point.

Perhaps if you described the scene first, and then spend 60% of the paragraph explaining relevance.

Here are some grammatical corrections,
You do not need a comma after scenes 1 and 2.
mourners are in the mercy of a greater power- either God or a Don

I hope this helped

I made a lot of punctuation changes, mostly breaking up, lengthy sentences, and clarifying them, with new word choices and commas, or just two sentences.

In all, a well written essay, which really draws you in, and keeps your attention. Your use of camera angle descriptions, is very helpful, in making your point. One of my majors in college was film communication, and I think you appreciate both the art and the science, of what the director is doing. You seem to have a good vocabulary, which is helpful, in describing action, sequentially, without getting boring.

Good job!
