I have to write a comparative essay using King Lear and The Tempest.
The topic is "In both plays, in what ways do sex and violence function together.
This is what I have so far.
Throughout Shakespeare's The Tempest and King Lear, sex and love are brought together with violence, war, and politics. In King Lear, Regan and Goneril, the villain in the play, plot against their, father, King Lear. They are power hungry and will do anything to obtain authority even resorting to violence such as blinding Gloucester for going against their word. However, Goneril and Regan's love for Edmund becomes their downfall. Their lust and jealously causes them to kill each other. In The Tempest, Prospero makes a big deal about Ferdinand not taking away Miranda's virginity and proceeds to put him through a series of test. He forces Ferdinand into servitude using violence. Prospero is using Miranda's virginity to get back his kingdom. In both plays, the characters use sex and violence to get what they want whether it's for power, love, or politics.
Is my thesis good?
