Discriminatory Behavior
Having a discriminatory outlook on life is detrimental and often naĂŻve viewpoint. Rejection based solely on appearance is an insult to human life and a vile concept that leads to further separation. In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Prejudice is directed towards the monster in a way that leaves him abandoned. Consequently the creature's desire and search for a companion inevitably fails due to his appearance. Prejudice and discriminatory behavior can have detrimental effects.

The major theme in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is the emphasis on appearance. Social prejudice based on instant judgment was the naĂŻve way that society treated the creature. The creature wanted desperately to fit into society and to find a companion, but instead was an outcast. Even his creator (victor) rejected him by expressing that he was "unable to endure the aspect of the being that I created." (pg 52) Victor described him as a hideous figure with "yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles" (pg 56). He believed by creating a being made of the most beautiful parts, the product would be beautiful, but when the creature wakes up Victor sees what he has created, he flees.

The creature at first wanders aimlessly overwhelmed by the various sensations of sight, touch, hearing and smell which are entirely new to his experience. The creature had to learn everything for himself and felt like a "poor, helpless, miserable wretch, who could distinguish nothing but pain" (chp10). As the creature seeks shelter in a village, the residents receive him with terror, and he is chased away. Devoid of friend, love, and soul, and having no place in the world, he seeks to take revenge on his creator and his closest acquaintances. Victors prejudice towards the creature ultimately backfires on him as innocent people are harmed in the process.
