I remember the summer prior to beginning my BSN program. I contemplated applying for the program...I wondered how a BSN would further my career. At the present time, I am so grateful that I made the decision to continue my education. Currently, I can understand the importance of a higher education and the impact it has on patient care.
One of my very first presentations was about early mobility of a patient in the ICU. I prepared that presentation for the span of a week, however the lessons I learned will forever change the way I practice nursing. I can honestly say that I now ambulate patients as soon are they are medically stable, a practice I did not perform early in my career.
Higher education has taught me the importance of evidenced based care. It is magical to me that current nursing is all based off of evidence based practice. Intense research has been completed highlighting the importance of certain treatments. I complete oral care every two hours because of multiple studies that have researched this topic and concluded that it helped decrease the incidence of ventilator-assisted pneumonia.
One of my professional goals is to become the best clinician I can be. I believe this can become a reality with the continuance of education to the furthest level that is offered to me. My plan is to complete my masters in Nurse Practioner and then go on to complete my PhD. This would be the ultimate gift to my patients. I am sure that gaining more education will result in the best possible evidence based care I can provide. This will allow me to diagnose, prescribe, and manage the overall care of a patient in congruence with my current nursing experience. As someone who is driven to manage and multitask I am drawn to the autonomy and independence that a nurse practitioner is granted.
Working in the healthcare field is a privilege and an honor. It requires hard work, innate intelligence, compassion, and ? I am an adult with practical life experience behind me. I am capable, and confident that my life skills have given me the training necessary to succeed in almost any situation
My work and education thus far has helped me define what type of nurse I am and who I would like to become. Participating in UMSL's nurse practioner program would be a wonderful experience that would allow me to reach my goals efficiently and expediently. My strengths lie in my character; I am a positive and confident person. I work hard and believe in honesty, integrity...? Acceptance into this program would be an incredibly meaningful opportunity.
