Professionals get the job done with good results. They are reliable, and they keep to their promises. If circumstances arise that prevent them from delivering on their promises, they manage expectations up front, and they do their best to make the situation right. Professionals don't make excuses, but focus on finding solutions.
I never really thought a day would come when I would have to do my final year project three times due to unforeseen circumstances. I had just gotten my proposal approved by my supervisor and I also had two months to prepare for my final exams. My colleagues preferred reading for their final papers and then beginning their projects after the exams. While speaking with one of our laboratory technicians she warned that from past experiences students who do their projects after exams either get their materials stolen and due to the number of students doing practical's at the same time space in equipments such as incubators autoclaves and refrigerators were not enough to store samples.
I had a very sensitive project topic which meant I needed all the room I could get without interruptions to be able to carry out my project. My supervisor was not an easy person as he also wanted results and disliked procrastination. Even though he wanted me to read for my exams he also encouraged me to begin my project as soon as possible.
After getting my samples ready I began isolating my microorganisms so I could get to a stage where I could lyophilize them until my exams were over then I could begin the final step of biochemical testing which did not require space.
I started my project before the exams. I went to get my samples from the different sample sites, but due to traffic I got back late so I had to preserve them in the laboratory refrigerator but due to power outage throughout the night my samples got spoilt. I decided to go for another set the same samples; this time I went quite early and got back in time to begin isolation of my microorganisms. I had successfully isolated my organisms and preserved them and this process took me about three days but, there was power outage for a week and my microorganisms couldn't withstand the pressure of thawing. I was so devastated because funds were getting wasted and I was shuffling reading for my finals and finishing my project before my exams to avoid the rush after exams. I went back to my supervisor to explain my challenge and he encouraged me to push further as I was determined to get the job done and still ace my papers with the short time. With just three weeks to my finals I went once again to for another set of samples and got back to isolating my microorganisms while working into the night power went out and my hostel was quite far and I could not abandon my work for a bit. I had to use the torch light from one of the security guards because I didn't want the power outage to deter me this time around. I isolated my organisms successfully once again and preserved them. All along I was keeping my supervisor informed about my findings and results. I had sleepless nights in the laboratory studying and overseeing my project completion and this made my supervisor astonished at my level of determination and organization despite the onerous circumstances beyond my control I remained sturdy. After I was done with my project and gotten clear and accurate results my final exams were also very good. I was given the privilege by my supervisor to supervise the completion of my other colleague's projects advising them on how to avoid my mistakes and unforeseen complications. My supervisor was amazed at my level of responsibility and dedication to get the done without looking for excuses and also ensuring my colleagues also fished theirs.
