What contribution will you make to the learning environment? Include examples of previous experience that demonstrate your readiness for graduate school, specific to the program for which you are applying (500 maxium)

Born in a poor province in China-Jiangxi province, I was always curious about the economic gap between east and west China. With this question in mind, I chose **** located in Shanghai, one of the richest cities to get learn economics, hoping I can find the answer.

Fortunately, in **** I was exposed to many new ideas in macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics, accounting, finance and so on, giving me a solid foundation in economics. After one year's study, I discovered that in east China there are more small and medium enterprises (SMEs), most of which are supported by illegal private bank and greatly contribute to regional economy. However, the banks offer few loans to SMEs. One reason is their intrinsic characteristics. For example, SMEs tend to feature less operational stability, under-developed credit lines and limited collateral assets. Hence, it is difficult to solve the bottleneck problems at root through bank loans or guarantees. This discovery brought me to a more specific topic, SME finance. Around the same time, the launch of Shenzhen SME Board attracted my attention because I could use stock market data to testify my conclusion through quantitative analysis. Thus, I built EGARCH model to prove the necessity to build a stock market for small and medium enterprises in China. Maybe it's simple for a finance professor, but I am definitely sure that this was a challenge work for me, a student who saw econometrics first time. This achievement required self-motivation, quantitative analysis ability and persistence. Due to my excellent work, one of my professors asked me to work as his research assistant in International Financial Research Institution of ECNU and to give comments on master's thesis.

This research experience not only trained my rigorous critical analysis ability and technical capabilities in econometrics, but also taught me how to learn by myself. I believe it is the research achievement that makes my potential contribution to the learning environment in *** the most valuable.

I think you can rewrite this a little better, or find a better way of saying econometrics was a challenging/stimulating field of study .

I feel that you learn best at your own comfort zone and it varies from people depending on what do they feel comfortable with. It can be your own home, library, the toilet, your school, or any other place that frees you from distraction.
