Describing myself as a decent candidate for MSc in Artificial Intelligence

Hello! This is my first thread, I hope I'm not breaking any rules. I would like to receive some feedbacks about this motivational letter I wrote to apply for a MSc in Artificial Intelligence. In particular, to me, it seems that I have spend too much words describing my previous education, but, since this is the first time I write something like this, I'm not sure if it's ok anyway.

Thanks in advance!

Motivational Letter for MSc in Artificial Intelligence

Dear Sir or Madame,

with this letter I would like to express my great interest in applying for your master program in Artificial intelligence.
Last November, I received my bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Automation Engineering from the [old University name],
in [country], with the highest mark, resulting in the top 2% of my class.

Since I was born, I have always been fascinated by mathematics and physics as they allow to describe the infinitely complexed real world with simple and unambiguous equations. Therefore, for my upper secondary education, I choose a scientific specialization through which I had the opportunity to both get the theoretical bases of these disciplines and be involved in national competitions. Meanwhile, I felt the need to apply what I was learning to real life and the use of computer seemed to me the best compromise between theory and practise. Consequently I decided to apply for a bachelor's progam in computer science in order to get a solid background on subjects that a computer scientist must know like Computer Architecture, Operative Systems, Database and Information Systems, Software Engineering, and, at the same time, I strengthened my skills in mathematics and physics selecting exams like Mathematical Analysis I and II, Advanced Mathematical Analysis, Physics A and B, Optimization Methods, Signal Theory and Fundamentals of Telecomunications.

As you might have noticed, my program of study was not totally focused on a specific area of computer science. Indeed, I was completely open-minded and curious towards everything I could get close to, and this allowed me to acquire a widespread knowledge and, most importantly, to understand which field of computer science I'm most interested in. The choice of a master degree in Artificial Intelligence, albeit well thought-out, has not been tricky, since many reasons have naturally led me to it.

Firstly, Artificial Intelligence is deeply influenced by several disciplines including mathematiscs, biology, neuroscience, computer science and phylosophy and having studied all of these at high school, it seems to me a really familiar topic and a natural choice for my further studies. Secondly, AI affects almost all sciences and this extremely motivate me since small improvements can lead to significant better solution to a wide range of use cases. In particular, I'm fascinated by the way computers are getting better and better in accomplish tasks that were considered specific to humans just few years ago, such as image and speech recognition and is even more surprising that they are doing this by imitating the way we do. In few years I would like to see myself engaged in a research-oriented path, pursuing a doctorate or being employed in a RnD department as I really take delight in developing new algorithms and technologies to improve or, even better, create innovative tools. It is no coincidence that, during my thesis project, I insisted on supporting the theoretical study of frame processing with the designing of a new format with the aim of reducing the bandwith requirement during the transmission of the frame from server to client.

Finally, I'd like to stress that I'm not new to Artificial Intelligence. In November I applied for and won a six-month fellowship on the [old university name] with starting date in February, focused on object recognition in 360-video. Unlike many others, I strongly believe that understanding the math behind deep learning algorithms is fundamental to master this subject and come up with new ideas, so books like 'Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach' by Russell and Norvig, 'Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition' by Christopher M. Bishop and 'Machine Learning: A Bayesian and Optimization Perspective' by Sergios Theodoridis are a great support to me these days. However, in order to fulfil the desire of seeing algorithms in action, I'm attending online courses and working with Python and Tensorflow, and, I must admit, it seems to me to have fun rather than to study. Besides, I enjoy reading new research papers on computer vision both to stay update about the current technology and to discover which techniques have been developed.

[University name] represents to me a great opportunity. It is ranked 58th in the QS World University Ranking and it is member of the League of European Research Universities as one of the leading universities in Europe in collaborations with advanced AI lab such as AMLAB, QUVA and Delta Lab, all three co-directed by [Name], one of the most powerful researcher in deep learning and computer vision. Consequently, your University offers valuable research-oriented career path in an extremely challenging and competitive environment, which is exactly what I intend to apply for after my master'degree. I love working in a research team, expressing my ideas and listening to other's ones aimed to solve a shared problem. I have always been particularly partecipating during my bachelor's lectures making questions and considerations since I'm firmly convinced that the exchange of ideas can be as much productive for me as for everyone else I'm talking with.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and time. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,
[My name]

Hi @neb,

I interest with your first para. However, it started to make me feel exhausted when read your second para and next.
My suggestion, you can move your forth para "Firstly, Artificial Intelligence is deeply influenced by several disciplines...." to become your second para.
I think it's better since it is explaining the reason why you decided to take Msc. Artificial Intelligence.

Try to put your main reason in the beginning para and the other as the supporting. So it will make the reader still on mood when reviewing your essay.

Gud luck!

Giuseppe, you over complicated what should have been a simple 5 paragraph letter to the admissions committee. There is no need for this tremendously over informative essay because about 90% of it is not required in a motivational letter. A motivational letter is simple. All it has to do is explain why factors were involved in your decision making process to attend masters degree studies. The most effective motivational letters are written from the point of view of a person with a vision for the future applications of the masters course he has chosen to study in his professional field. Consider the current abilities of artificial intelligence and what you think it can further do in the future within a specific realm or profession. Then, explain why you think this is something that should be pursued to become a reality. What obstacles do you see as preventing this development? Those should be your main "motivating" factors. Remember, this is supposed to be a cover letter for your actual application essays and documents. So it should not be more than 5 paragraphs in presentation. All the other information you have here should be presented in either a personal statement or a statement of purpose. Both of which should be included as part of your application essays.
